Ford 5.0 Coyote engine
« on: September 11, 2012, 11:57:06 PM »
Been living with this engine in my F150 for a few months now and have to say I absolutely love this thing. In the F150's it's rated at 360 HP, in the Mustangs it's 412 HP and I've read the crate motors are dynoing at 460+HP stock. Not bad for 302 cubic inches that will idle at ~600 to 700 RPM and get 15 MPG city in a vehicle that weighs well North of 5K pounds.

For those of you that like to read techno-babble about engines here is a pretty good article, just be warned it is pretty long:

the f150 version has more torque then the mustang version, but shares the same torgue and oil cooling as the boss "road runner" version.

motor also shares the same bell housing design as the 4.6 mod motor, so good drop in "upgrade" to those crappy 4.6L cars :P

this is ford's first version of the pcm controlled cam timing.

2012, first new vehicle I have ever owned  :) It's amazing how much improved this little 5.0 engine is compared to my brothers 2005 5.4 (same type truck, F150 Supercrew).

Just a follow up on my truck that I bought new in early 2012.

It's been totally awesome  :D

  • 2 sets of tires (original and current ones), second set still has a lot of meat on them
  • Just put on second set of brakes
  • 90K + miles
  • Stock except for stereo (sub, door speakers and 3 amps)
  • Fixed known problems before there was an issue (fuse pump fuse, coolant tank leak)
  • Lifetime mileage 17.6 MPG
  • Full synthetic oil since first oil change
  • Never been garaged (kept outside it's entire life)
  • No problems at all

Hope to hit 200K+ with this thing. Just washed and waxed today. Never been in any accident.

What happened to the stock engine?

She's still is stock, and runs like new  :)

Been the best vehicle I've owed by a fair bit.

Now the wife's 2015 Town & Country minivan has been a pile of crap:
  • Both front window regulators broke (about 3 hours each to fix)
  • Torque converter clutch disintegrated (thank god still under warranty then)
  • Roller rocker failed (about 10 hours total)
  • Sliding door rear latch failed, still working on it, waiting on parts, have to gut the entire door (at least 8 hours)
  • Rear camera was intermittent when almost out of warranty, took it to the dealer twice, could not reproduce problem so they would not do anything. I took rear hatch apart, put 120V on the camera and strangely enough next time they checked it, it was fried, so replaced under warranty  ;)

Will never own a Dodge again :P

it's good to see an update. for my expectations: if a car/truck doesn't get 300K, it's garbage.

so. all volkswagens outside of diesel, are garbage. and, to pat my own back. still have my 1988 honda crx:

*purchased around 2005
*hauls pinball machines
*did head gasket. once. was a cake job with john
*bitch be slammed
*slow, but reliable
*45 MPG

i've had f150s, several nissans, several toyotas, a dodge ram (100% with mamushka on these), mazdas, infinitis, lexus, mitsubishi, subaru, vw (blech after '95), gmc, isuzu...but i'll be driving this crx in 2032. :P  check back in.

My ex boss has a 2003 F150 with the 4.6 (he bought it new), now has low oil pressure, but still drives  :(

He has never been in the motor or transmission or had any major issues: 447,000 miles.  :o

i had a 2004 f150 with the 4.2 engine. it had 175000 on it. kept popping a head gasket pour-in fix, so i sold it. it was fine, until you floored it. then, it would pop the block seal and slowly eat up the coolant.

still, a good truck i had for a couple of years.

your boss should try a thicker oil viscosity, before doing the oil pump. ;D
