BSD DMD issue
« on: March 02, 2013, 08:32:32 PM »
Well, been playing the crap out of BSD, and one day when I went to go play the DMD was flickering a little weird and then it went away. A couple days later I turn the game on and the DMD is really dim, some black spots that aren't being produced. Called Atari Jim, he asked me to check the voltages, which they were coming back lower than normal ie

orange - (-117.6dc)
blue -     (-105.6dc)
black
black
gray        (+4.9V)
gray yellow (+12.4V)
Brown     (+65.4V)

it's a really big pain to get pins down to Jim, I don't own a truck :( So i decided to buy a new DMD controller board (rottendog).... comes in the mail today. I am getting the same readings on the DMM, so what else could it be? I will be bring the game to Jim when I get a chance, so don't go over board on the tech lingo for I am a novice. lol

Thanks guys.

is it plugged directly into the wall? no extension cord, no surge protector.

make sure your power outlet has a constant 124-ish AC voltage output.

borrow a DMD to test/swap out, that's the 1st thing i would try.

stab the gremlin in the eye.

Did you re-seat the ribbon cables? Not just between the display and the board but the CPU and Driver board.

Heading to work now,

Plugged into out w/ strip. Same results.
Will check outlet with DMM when I get home.

Mamushka - reseating was the first thing I did, but doesn't hurt to try again!

all ribbon cables are new. flip the DMD ribbon cable and clean the pins at both ends as well, it does sound like data loss.

Same reading on the service outlet in the cab. Reseated all the ribbon cables again just to be on the safe side, problem still exist.

u need to test with another dmd, and test that dmd in another machine.

95% its just on its way out, maybe starting to gas., i have a bad one that does the same thing.

But would that cause the low voltage readings?

your readings are fine, all well within the window of what they should read.

most likely a dmd that's giving up life. not the driver.

it functioned fine at the APE, at least when i played it. if you leave it on for a 1/2 hour, does it fill in?

It was up all weekend at APE.  I have a RS with a weird line issue, not sure what it is actually.  And it has Adams Family burn too.  I think the cheapest DMD's I have seen are on Pinball Life but give Curly a call too, he may have some spares from older machines too.
