SNES composite cord to HDMI?
« on: May 28, 2018, 12:01:44 PM »
So we found an old SNES in the attic and it works great but none of my new TV's have the old school composite hookups. Is there a good converter/adapter to HDMI out there to get 1080p that would be recommended? I googled it but not easy to find definitive answers. Thanks for any help/info.

There are a couple options here.  It's not going to give you 1080p, obviously, but will allow the SNES to be hooked up to an HDMI only TV.
https://www.amazon.com/GANA-Composite-Converter-Adapter-Supporting/dp/B01L8GG6PW/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1527523748&sr=8-1&keywords=composite+to+component+converter

If the TV has an RF port (cable jack) on the back you could also buy something like this

Thanks for the reply. It would seem it does improve the video somewhat though right?

There may be an appearance of a better picture because there are no scan lines, but there is no actual upgrade in quality.

on my hdmi tv, for my PS1, i just ran a cable into video RCA, and ran the audio into an external speaker setup.

with a dreamcast, i ran a rca video to s-video splitter, and again ran audio to the external speakers.

same setup with a nintendo to my son's tv set.

you don't want to upgrade the video...it's 1986, after all. :)

just adding this, as an hdmi adapter may not give you audio off the snes. good luck.

Makes sense, would love to feel like it's 1986 for a minute lol even if it's playing SNES  ;D. Thanks for the input, your always really helpful.

Here's the setup I use for most of my classics -> HDMI

1. SCART Cable, available for a good chunk of systems including SNES, Genesis, etc.
https://www.amazon.com/Mcbazel-Scart-Cable-SNES-GameCube-NTSC/dp/B01N8RCWK9/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1529419803&sr=8-1&keywords=snes+scart

2. SCART -> HDMI adapter
https://www.amazon.com/TNP-Converter-Adapter-Upscaler-Connector/dp/B0177DG71S/ref=sr_1_cc_2?s=aps&ie=UTF8&qid=1529419848&sr=1-2-catcorr&keywords=scart+hdmi+adapter

Somebody told me this setup didn't work for them at all but I've had no problems. I play my Genesis/Sega CD and my SNES on my LCD and it looks perfectly fine. Now that I have the PVM set back up I've been using that more but I'm still glad to have this if I want to do captures etc. as it's a lot easier to capture the HDMI output than analog without degradation.
