It's perfectly fine to make a stupid movie as long as you follow the stupid movie rules. One of these rules is to keep it simple because at the end of the day.. your movie is stupid and you need to focus on whatever the real draw is (ie Dinosaurs). Jurassic World understood this as the plot was very simple.. and the Dinosaur scenes were very awesome. Bonus points were given to the likability of it's leads namely Chris Pratt and Dallas Bryce Howard. It was stupid but it was fun.
Jurassic World 2 starts off well enough.. the first 15 minutes or so are a lot of fun. Our heroes are dodging dinosaurs, bad guys and upping the ante.. lava flows. This part was highly entertaining even if parts were predictable and stupid.
Then unfortunately the movie decides to shift gears and focus on plot. A very, very stupid plot. This is of course a bad idea. Criminally for about an hour there are no major Dinosaur action scenes. We also get very little time with our leads as the film instead focuses on the bad guys and their stupid, stupid plans.
For example.. and yes technically a spoiler (but c'mon!).. the bad guys seem to be intent on weaponizing this super raptor hybrid. How will this work you might ask? Well if they shine a laser at something the raptor will attack it. They do this by using a rifle with a laser sight. You know what works better than attack raptors? Rifles that fire bullets. It's just fucking stupid.. and if you think it isn't ask why no modern army employs Lions, Tigers or Bears. Somehow though we are to believe this is worth millions to a cadre of international bond villians.. whatever.. it's stupid.
Things pick up slightly at the end when the Dinosaurs break loose again but it's not to the epic levels we'd expect.. there's a few raptor fights and it's basically over whilst setting up for what appears to be an equally stupid sequel. Also if you were hoping for Jeff Goldblum to ride in and save things.. the trailer pretty much has his entire scene in it so no luck there.
At the end of the day this wasn't completely horrible but it wasn't good either. It occupies that loathsome position somewhere at the bottom of 'average'. If you really liked Jurassic World there's a few fun sequences here that may make this worth a Red Box but it's nothing special. If you are in the camp that only thought the original Jurassic Park was good you'll find absolutely nothing to like here.
It's a shame.. another mediocre movie this year.. how hard is it to find decent filmmakers these days? Surely someone could have done a better script than this.. you know.. something with a steady stream of Dinosaur attacks.. that's all anyway wants or expects from these movies.
