Would you rather? Pin sound or color DMD
« on: December 05, 2018, 06:23:14 PM »
I might buy myself a big upgrade! Both can move from game to game.
Which would you rather have? Upgraded sound or color DMD? I am a big audio guy and think the improvement might be pretty great however I love the look of color DMD's. At the same time, I spend more time listing to call-outs vs looking at the screen.  So torn!

Which would you choose and why?
Has anyone used the Pin-sound boards?

If the game is turned on and not playing, usually it's not making any sounds, but the display is trying to attract your attention, and a color display will wins me over an attract sound.

Sound is important, but pinball is a visual game.

what game? i lean towards a color display.

unless it's a gottlieb DMD, there really isn't a bad sound package out there. :)

and for stern, a $20 program tweeks all of their sound mistakes.

+1  a lot depends on the game.  also a sub can make a world of difference.

Ive got both. I got Pinsound for my Creature and replaced all the crappy Casio type music with stereo versions of era appropriate songs, and I think it sounds great. I'm thinking about adding Pinsound to my Addams Family, because there's a really cool original score out there, but you can keep the callouts. I have a sound package on my TWD that definitely improves the game. I've got Color DMD's in all my games, except BSD, which I think just looks better in red. Not many games need sound upgrades, but almost every game screen looks way better in color. Pinsound does allow you to have stereo.

ColorDMD for me. I feel like most pins already haven good enough or great sound.

But, I also like shiny things so take it with a grain of salt.

Color DMD, where I come.

I saw a few at FPF. I think they were LED and not the LCD version. I think I would go LED just for the original look of all the dots. The LCD I know can make them but it is different somewhat.

This will be going in my WCS94 but will most likely move in a few years to whatever game comes my way.

Thanks for the responses! I would really love to play a game with the Pinsound upgrade, just to see if I can tell the difference. I think on a game like Addams family you would definitely know the difference. I have memories of dropping new Sound Blaster cards into my PC and replaying all my favorite games.

It's easy enough to do your own "PinSound" kit and a lot cheaper. You could easily afford to do both.

Check this out.

http://www.dziedzic.us/wpc_speaker_replacement.html

when i read upgraded sound, i assumed the kit to make your own callouts/music. that thing costs quite a bit.

WTF is right, i've written a few threads on changing out the crappy stock speakers. use car audio, you won't look back, if that's your goal. you can do the whole machine for 30 bucks.

flipper fidelity and pinball pro are just low-end car audio bits with their stickers on them.

stern uses garbage chinese 4 watt backbox speakers.  go with a legacy 8" car woofer for the cabinet, and your choice of backbox speakers
(size depends on machine, go 5 1/4 coax times 2 for a williams/bally, or 4" mids with integrated tweeter for a stern).

good luck.
