molded adapter at the sata end = bad.  sata end with visible metal collars = acceptable. spiney found a good video of the issue:


good public service announcement. i have some sitting units i'll have to go back thru to double check.

The Fucked up thing is i'm sure the faulty Molex adapter was one I threw in the machine when I rebuilt it 2 weeks ago. So that time bomb has been sitting in a box for probably a decade waiting for the right time to strike.

Right now tally on the 50 cent part is

3x Hard Drives (8tb worth)
1x PSU

Case smells like somebody burned a tire in it but that should clean up. Is the motherboard OK? Who knows. Will find out when new power supply comes in.

I'm ordering one with 8x SATA connectors.. never again!!

you may be able to swap the control pcb on the hdd and recover the drive.

Power Supply came in, computer booted just fine so the damage was restricted to the OG PSU and the hard drive that melted. I was even able to get the two other hard drives that were 'torched' to spin back up. I got the data off but I'm not sure If i would trust them at this point since obviously they get pretty hot.

The torched hard drive is a loss. Swapping the PCB didn't seem like it was viable as the chip that held the configuration data that you also need to swap was pretty melted. The data on it was all replaceable so it's not the end of the world.

Thumbs up to EVGA's "midweek madness" sale.. they apparently dump a bunch of stuff (mainly video cards and PSUs) out cheap every wednesday. I got a nice modular 750w PSU with 9x SATA connectors for $50 shipped.

Watch out for cheap NVME to PCIe adapters as well.  Apparently, they really need to have a capacitor for voltage protection and many don't (including the one I just bought and made magic smoke with yesterday :( ).

After this I'm going to be extremely leary of any adapters.. especially anything that involves things that transmit power or get hot easily.
