The Shadow - Please help.
« on: August 31, 2019, 08:59:09 PM »

Hi everyone.  Appreciate any help on this.

The battlefield knocker sticks sometimes on the track as it moves right.  Doesn’t happen all the time.   No visible bend in the path of the track.   Gears look good too.    I’m stumped.  Any ideas?

Thanks.  John

For reference, the assembly is on page 2-29 in the manual.

Does it run properly in test?

Things to try:
Run the mini-playfield test. (T.16)
Check the optos in switch test. (T.1)
Inspect the coil slide shaft and drive gear, checking for damage and/or debris.
If all those check out, you might have an issue in the gearbox.

Clean all the optos and run the switch and mini playfield tests.  If I remember correctly, the optos are used as limit switches so if one is dirty/obstructed or broken the game will think the slide is at one of the far sides and stop the motor to prevent damage.

Thanks everyone.   I have tried the following to no avail:

1).  Cleaned optos
2).  Mini play field test shows no error when I run the test.

I don’t see anything wrong w the gears.   Ugh.  Any other ideas?  Thanks in advance.

Did you clean both opto’s on both sides of the cabinet flipper switches? And did you also run a switch test to check to make sure every switch in the game is working correctly?

If it stop intermittently, you should check and make sure everything is tightened down and aligned properly.

In the video, it appears to be moving a lot slower than it should be. If it doesn't get to limit position in the time specified in the game code, it will assume the opto is broken and stop it from moving further to prevent damage. This safeguard isn't in place during test mode, which is why that works.

Start by making sure the gear on the track isn't slipping/skipping gears. Replace gear if teeth are worn. Check that all set screws are tight enough so the gear isn't slipping on the gearbox shaft. Second check that the motor is firm on the gearbox assembly, it won't work properly if it is loose. Third take the gearbox apart, clean thoroughly. I usually use carburetor cleaner. Reassemble with fresh gearbox grease.

Good luck!

Replace the optos on the assembly. If they are flakey they will cause erratic behavior. Also check to see that each switch in the column and row of the optos has a diode oriented correctly. I had a basket case shadow that two techs couldn’t fix by finding a diode that has been installed backwards on a switch no where near the upperplayfield. Good luck if you get frustrated I’ll be glad to take it off your hands  ;) great game have owned two and miss them.

Danny,  there's a lot of.... Well badness in the world today. I see it in the court everyday. I've sentenced boys younger than you to the gas chamber.... didn't want to do it.... felt I owed it to them.
