Episode 5 thoughts

This episode really brought to the front something that's been kinda brewing. Is this show really about Picard? Stuff just seems to happen around him not because of him. If this was an 80s SCI-FI/Action TV show he'd be the rich white guy that pays for the car but doesn't really do anything. For example in this episode what did Picard actually do of importance?

Like previous episodes the show doesn't really feel like Star Trek. Sure there's some obscure call backs but mainly this is generic action SCI-FI show. Honestly it might be even better without the Star Trek trappings as they could probably do something more original.. although probably not given the writing and lets be honest without the Nostalgia angle nobody would watch. But still, it feels like an existing story that got turned into a Star Trek story late in production.

Speaking of Nostalgia it was nice seeing Jeri Ryan again just wish the story was better.

As expected a ton of plot holes in this one. How does the underworld chick who specializes in harvesting/re-selling Borg parts not recognize Picard -- ie one of the most important people in terms of Borg/Alpha Quadrant history? Oh he had an eye patch on, nevermind.

The chick from Scott Pilgrim going rogue was a total shock! (/sarcasm)

I dunno.. show is stuck in mediocre land. This episode was watchable but I think that's mainly because it was once again directed by Frakes who seems to know how to make these things work even if the script is dumb. It's still slow and nothing is really all that compelling. I'm just in it for the references and old actors at this point.

Same here and agree with above.  Since the show is so dark we probably won’t see any classic humor. I’d love to see a Q reunion where they have a cgi young Q popping in and says to Picard “You’ve aged mon Capitan’. Then he leaves and pops back as older Q.  The new writers wouldn’t get it.

Train-wreck now free:

https://news.avclub.com/cbs-all-access-releases-all-of-star-trek-picard-for-fr-1842477210

Smart marketing move I guess, the season is over or nearly over by now (I stopped after #4) so it wasn't likely to drive any new subscribers, and many people have time to kill at the moment, serves to promote season 2, etc.

I'll stick to just a synopsis & the Red Letter Media videos about it though.

It's actually shocking how little I'm getting through while working from home. Short-form, YouTube stuff just works better when I have to check work ever 5 minutes (even if there's not a lot to do).

I'm through episode 8 I guess? Honestly I'm mostly watching them so I can watch the redletter recaps.

The show remains frustrating. It could be good but it's not. Once again it comes down to the the junior high fanfic writing. I don't know how these shit writers like Kurtzman continue to get work, their output isn't very good and the response shows. Surely there are decent writers somewhere?

Also Picard remains mostly just along for the ride, in most episodes he does little of importance. They throw him a speech here or there to remind you he's on the show but it's definitely not a show centered around Picard.

Picard finale thoughts...

Seven of Nine is apparently gay now.  No backstory to fill in the blanks of what happened with her and Chakotay since Voyager when she wasn't which is pretty lame.  Also, she just left the xb's to hang while she joins up with Picards new crew?

The cut and paste of the federation fleet was just god awful and lazy.  All these years later and improvements with graphics engines, and we only have one ship design to look at out of the entire fleet.

super synths are apparently just metal octopus arms.  I don't get it.

Nice sendoff for Data, but why didn't they explain why Data's consciousness wasn't given a new body like Picard was?  Doesn't it seem a bit cruel that he was left to exist in isolation all these years after his consciousness was reconstituted?

Overall, this had potential to pull through and fell short.  Way short.  People are just too hungry for new TNG ish content though, so it will keep being churned out in its current form.

I thought a lot of the same things.  I enjoyed it but as with many things the ending seemed rushed up until that point.

Brent probably wanted him to go cause of all that makeup anyway.   Now he can act w/o it.  I thought it was appropriate for his character.  If I were Picard I’d be pissed they didn’t give him a younger version of himself.   But it’s not technically feasible to deal with the cgi otherwise they should have done that.

Now I wish they would do a Star Trek Riker.  But have it be 1 hour stand alone stories like the original.
