Once again man I don't really get what reality you are following with all of this.

 :o

Its pretty simple.. when they were kids like lots of dopey bands they agreed to split publishing 25% for each member because it didnt mean anything and they had no clue that would be millions of dollars.

Once it become clear that this publishing was worth a fuckton of money and that the bass player did pretty much nothing to earn it (did he write anything? did he even play bass half the time?) they wanted him to renegotiate to something more in line with his actual "contributions" which wasnt much.

He said no this is the agreement we signed and that caused the issues over time.

If you think its great that he got 25 percent of the songs he didnt write (or even play bass on some times) then I dont know what to tell you.

A dopey piece of paper they signed at 19 cost Ed millions upon millions of dollars he had to cough up to someone who didnt do anything to earn it... I have no idea why he would be mad at that?  :P

I just like how he MA is always the good guy in this situation.. he was the one being a dick, was making millions anyways off touring etc and had to be a pig to keep easy money coming in he didnt earn.

When Don Felder asked for a bigger cut he royally pissed off Henley and Frey big time and got axed.  I don’t see the same with Anthony.  He didn’t get offered a smaller pie like what the eagles did to their other band mates.

Oh I dont care lol... the constant Eddie Trunk inspired "poor Michael Anthony" narrative is pretty tired though.

Eddie Trunk loves anyone one bored enough to give him an interview every few months.

Anthonys net worth is 60 million or something mostly made off of songs he didnt write.. I feel so bad for him.  :P

Here's an Eddie quote from an '82 Guitar World interview..

How would you rate David Lee Roth's vocals on Fair Warning.?

The truth is, I don't think he sang as good as I played. He took off for two weeks after the tour, and again it was "Whadda ya got, Eddie? Like I said, I had basic ideas for pretty much everything that's on the record. I worked my ass off on that one. But I love it, it's my life.
Whereas Dave, well...I won't rag too much on Dave; he pulls his weight.

Mike [Anthony] doesn't. He doesn't do anything; he has no input whatsoever. But he has remodeled his whole house and bought himself a [Porsche] Carrera with the money he's made off of us. Whatever.

MA gets 1/4. Since there is 4 people did they split the publishing 4 ways maybe?
I remember Tom Petty talking about their first contract, EMI I think. Anywho he said he thought that in their first contract the word "songbook" was in regard to books with lyrics and music sold tp the general public. He know and wasn't told that "songbook" meant the income of all publishing!

Yeah Michael Anthony throughout all of this has remained a class act. I've never heard him say anything specifically negative about the Van Halen brothers even when he had every right to do so. When it got really bad Sammy Hagar stepped in to put the record straight.

Publishing is definitely where the money is.  In the article is sounds like like Eddie is more frustrated than angry, it sounds like he did a ton of work on that album.  To say MA sat around and re did his house is kind of shallow.  Maybe at this time the friendship working and otherwise was fraying.  He had been with the band since the beginning, toured and recorded continuously for 35 years!  So there has to be more to that relationship if they kept him around that long and he deserved to be payed well considering the 100's of millions in gross sales they all built together.  to me it just sounds like things soured, which usually does happen with most any band on the planet.

Its not uncommon to see this too, when the Smashing Pumpkins came together to record Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness(or Siamese Dream, I forget), it was already wrote and mostly recorded by Billy Corgan.  The band was pissed and even made a comment about just being a band for hire.  Im sure there are tons of examples like this.

Of course he's angry.. all the pressure is on him every time they do a record since he has to come up with goods.

He wrote all the music (and later recorded, engineers, mixes etc) and has to give away millions in publishing money to someone who just shows up and plays bass and writes nothing (or doesnt even play bass in many cases it was already done for him on Fair Warning and later records)

The issue is that people don’t understand how the music business works and how you make money. Publishing is quite literally songwriting and for a huge band its a cash machine.

Just being "in the band" doesn’t make you a writer. There are mechanicals and other things that relate to playing on a record or touring but yes songwriting is where the money is.

Doesn’t matter if you are in the band or play bass or sing or do whatever.. if you didn’t write the song or have any input at all to the song you should not get publishing…  period.

There is a whole Billy Corgan thing on Joe Rogan about the very same issues... broke up that band since he was smart enough to keep his publishing and not give it to band members who did nothing on the records.

Yes and having to wear what are undoubtedly uncomfortable masks and outfits on stage playing concerts. Crazy.
