My new project
« on: October 03, 2011, 08:50:39 AM »
I haven't had a fun car for about 10 years and have been casually looking for a while now.  I finally found one which fit the bill for price/fun/old and just got it home this weekend.  I've had responses from cool to crazy but I figured it kind of fit with my coin op collection.

It's a pretty solid car with little rust but still needs a bit of cosmetic and other minor work.  Also, a big thanks to ToddK for helping me out with the purchase and for the recommendation of a great mechanic in Orlando.

that's badazz. i have a couple of friend's BIG into old chevy's. that's one you won't see every decade. ;) is the motor swapped? looks like it had/has heavy duty suspension to support a big heavy motor, or maybe that's just the way it appears? very cool.

It's a 1972 Checker taxi with a Chevy 250 straight 6.  Checker didn't make engines and started using Chevy engines and trans in the mid 60's.  I have no idea if it's the original engine but it is the same type as what it would have come with (there was a V8 option too I think).

My understanding is they used parts from bigger vehicles since they would see lots of abuse.  For example, I think they used the disc brakes from the Suburban.  It actually rides and drives pretty smooth.  It even has the taxi meter still although it doesn't appear to be working.

That's awesome!  You could probably do just a couple things to it to make it really stand out.  Not 100% sure what, but it looks great as it stands.

Checkers are great cars, built like tanks.  I had a customer that had a personal checker, because it was one of the safest cars in its day.  Just a side note, you may have to put "NOT IN SERVICE" someware on it.

I thought I would pass on a funny story with the Checker.  I wondered when I got it if anyone would ever seriously try to flag me for a ride. This weekend while driving to a friend's house I came over a small hill and a guy walking on my side of the road tried to flag me down. I think he saw the roof light first and once I got closer he figured out I wasn't open for business though.

Now that I'm a little more familiar with Checkers I can say I think his car is overpriced by at least 5K (assuming it's working and doesn't need anything major.)  They have a following but are still not a really high dollar car right now, although some of the guys on the forum say the interest has grown.  Perhaps because they have been out of use long enough for people to grow nostalgic?

Anyways, Checker made civilian versions of their cars (which is what he has) and they were almost the same but were made with more comfort in mind so you got cloth seats, fabric headliner, etc.  I prefer the taxi version myself, but have found owning a Checker is really a pain compared to other cars.  Some parts are standard GM but many others are not available at all or really expensive.  I've debated selling mine and getting something more "mainstream" just because it would make working on it so much easier.  I'm torn though as I really like the car and it really is a lot fun to drive.

As an aside, if you want a really unique Checker try the Aerobus which was made for airports to shuttle flight crews.
