google "pinball bang backs"
its when you hit the pinball to force the ball to pop out when it has rolled passed the flipper
A bang back and a death save are, in short, very physical manipulations of the machine in attempt to get the ball back into play after it drains.
Bang backs involve banging the lock down bar with your wrist to get the ball to bounce back into the playfield off the apron wall, death saves involve a rapid movement/sliding of the machine to get the ball back into play.
The specifics are not that important.
Although "bang backs" and its cousin "death saves" are illegal in tourneys, it really is a moot point.
The tilts on serious tourney games are usually pretty darn tight, so even if you could do them, you would tilt the game. Fun parlor trick, but in a tourney forget it.
