The rate hike went into effect Jan 1st..
What price has everyone been seeing lately.
I have a main house and pool house with ridiculous oversized AC and water heater in said pool house installed by said in-laws so my power bill is pretty insane.
Just replaced the main house AC/duct work+ insulation install pending...and working to try and get the bill lower. Any input is welcome on what everyone else with houses is seeing from FP&L

What do you consider insane? Price range?

we're nowhere near that price. I just installed a powered exhaust fan into the roof yesterday to help vent out some of that ridiculous static attic heat we get in the summer. while on the roof, it amazed me how little roof vents a lot of the houses around me have. our neighbors have 1. the attic temps today are noticeably already lower than yesterday at 1:00.
edited: last month was $198, ruff 2000 sq ft under air.
also installed a window shaker for the bedroom. I have bent over sideways to get this house comfy...our central A/C is dead-on for Freon pressures and all, but the home just suffers from May thru September...then again, I turn off A/C and run fans only when I can get away with it...

Installed a new ac unit this year went from $280.00/$300.00 a month down to $180.00 and less a month and
that's keeping the ac @ 73. the old unit was so undersize it never shut off and that was a new home build had the house
measured and windows checked and now the ac runs less then a hour a day.
I use the FPL dash board tracker a lot to find out what time my heavy usage is and see if I can control it.
I also changed every bulb in the house with LED's less heat in the house made a difference.
That's my 2 cents

What I have noticed from the electric companies, is that all houses large and small have the same tier rates...so a small house would use under 1000kwh, and a large house much more, and every 1000kwh used the rate doubles as punishment. I was thinking of adding another meter to divide the power usage and not get punished so bad. I think the tier rate is unfair, as they charge the big businesses in the area a discounted price, and the more they use, the less the kwh rate. There is no environmental charge...

Wow... That is insane. That's twice as much as I pay.

And i was pissed last month's bill was $181...yeesh.

I fill your pain just use the fpl tracker you can look at it buy the hour, day, month .
Unless you go solar to off set some of your usage but that a big expense we are stuck paying the high rates.

I want to say "Good God!", but how many square feet? I saw big improvement replacing a 17 year old heat pump. I could still stand to have some insulation work done. I've heard the heat pump type water heaters will save you some money. Going LED will make a diff over time. I remember the good old days when my kids would leave the master bath lights on. That was 12 60 watt bulbs. Ouch!

I'm in Clearwater in a 1900sq house with a pool, Just me and my dog and it's usually between 300-400 this time of year.

I have used the FPL tracker on occasion. If I look at the month when I do the Open House, the day of the Open House at least 2-3 times bigger than any other day of that month.

Mid-FL here (Tampa). Not FPL, we have TECO (Tampa Electric Co.). Average about $250/Month - ~2750 ft^2 house, in-ground 14K Gal pool, 4 people, mostly incandescent lights. We do have gas so that takes out the water-heater and stove from the electric bill.

AC running less than an hour a day is generally not a good thing. You want your AC to do 2 things, cool the air and "condition" (dehumidify) the air. The only way the AC is going to wring a reasonable amount of moisture from the air is to run a long time. I talked to more than one HVAC Engineer who told me the perfectly sized system would never turn off on the hottest day while maintaining the desired temp. This "perfect AC system" also would be just as efficient as an over sized unit that ran for short burst of time as long as the SEER rating is the same. You might want to talk to your AC guy and let him know how infrequent the unit is running.

I forgot to add, solar screens on your sun facing windows make a big diff. They are very popular in Texas, but not so much in Florida for some reason. I made my own. Though if you have double pane windows it may not make such a a great improvement.

talk to 10 HVAC guys, get 10 completely different stories.
a system running all day without turning off doesn't sound right. i wouldn't put up with that, unless i had it set to 62 on july 20th. sounds like an undersized unit, but i'm no a/c guy...just learned enough to keep from getting scammed by them.
i just put 2 large holes in my roof, added a turbine and a powered unit running off a thermostat. make much better attic ventilation, and that helps the house out in this rough summer. our roof was replaced in 2011, and that contractor is an idiot....we had better ventilation before he came in and put on the new roof...which sadly, we didn't need. dumb city ordinances.

You are so correct I talked to my a/c contractor when this thread started he said it is running correctly with the temperature
it is set at and running at 40% Humidity home humidity should remain between 30 and 45 percent.
He also said a unit running to long could be undersized for the house even oversize will also cause a problem.
The new units are so efficient and the size of the outside unit towered over my old unit.
I also run my ceiling fans 24 7 in the summer months.
-
I bought a new AC system about a year ago and keep it set at 72 degrees, about 50% humidity. For my 2000 square feet under air, my FPL bill was $240 last month, which is higher than I paid last summer. However, I am also now running a portable AC unit in my Florida room 24/7 (have pins out there lol), so it's hard to tell if I am paying that much more for the house AC than I did last summer last summer.

I think the idea is running all day while maintaining ideal temp/humidity, but I think that's for maximum comfort, not necessarily cost savings. I like the Ecobee thermostat for performance metrics and ability to use IFTTT to automatically set temps based on who is in the house. Check your ceiling with a thermal imager. I've got 3 rooms that get a bit hotter than the others. Part of that is the side of the house they are on, but part of it is also the 2x2 square of missing insulation in each room. I've read that missing even a small amount of insulation can make a big difference in performance.

I keep my central air on 73 degrees, 1800 sq ft house, also air runs constantly in 1100 sq ft shop, and also in Brads 400 sq ft shop. My bill last month was $401, which was $25 more than the same month last year, plus last year I used 4 more KWs. Yes, I feel the hike. I feel like K7 says putting another meter on the shop/gameroom, I know it would lower my KW rate, but I don't know if it would make any difference once you figure in the meter charge
