Title: Question for "HAMPSTER WITHOUT A P"
Post by: Weeze on September 07, 2017, 04:33:29 PM
you have a good working knowledge on electrical theory and related electrical things
whats your opinion on running the ac of your heatpump off of a portable 5000 watt generator? will it damage your "heat pump" boards. You undoubtably understand the application Im thinking of. got the "rat tail" to the 220 dryer plug and understand what to turn off as far as the breaker panel goes. think its got 2 220 circuts on the generator.
your input ,as always, would, and is greatly appreciated!

your 5k genny isnt going to run your heatpump.  unless its a small portable unit like a spot cooler.

a 5Kw genny can only deliver 20 Amps @ 240 Volts... Most Heat pumps need 40+ Amps and then your Blower needs another 20+

your going to need a 20Kw to power your A/C+ frig.

get a bucket of ice and make as swap cooler with ice.

In case others are needing info on power requirements

V x I = P

V voltage          220volts
I amps           x   50 a/c amps
P power watts =  11k minimum

5000 watt generator can run 20amp circuit on 220v.  On 115v, 2 20amp circuits,  Can run a window a/c on one side and refridgerator, tv, lights on the other.

***If tying into a breaker panel, turn all breakers off, and also the main power breaker to prevent power backfeed into the power lines.

Yep.  Pick up a window shaker and at least you will have one cool room in the house.

Good luck to you and everyone in the storm.

I have a window shaker and a 9000btu 110v mini split in my Florida room...either one will run off my 6000w generator...as long as the roof stays on I'll be chillin. Also probably deaf from my loud azz Powerstroke generator  ;)

I have a 7500 watt generator and my central a/c just got a 'kickstart' cap installed, so I can run practically everything except the water heater.

If you rotated the a/c and other 220 devices, you can run the water heater.  If not, open the top element cover and remove the power wire and tape it up.  It will take longer to heat, but better than nothing.
