Title: The June 7th Auction
Post by: number six on June 08, 2008, 01:22:50 PM
Well I was pretty dissapointed with the Auction. Last auction was also kinda weak but there were some incredibly good deals.. of course I didn't have a lot of pocket change to take advantage. Flip a few months later and I've got money burning a hole but absolutely nothing I could justify buying (and I was really, really trying!). Most of it was either junk or projects.. two things I definitely don't need.

Did anyone score anything neat?

Yay nice to see the Village is back, shame Im back to a Noob  ??? yeah auction was a weird one, prices were all over the place, a lot going higher than they should, Sucked on the Crazy Taxi, but really not going to pay $700 for a non working one! Good to see everyone

One of the poorest auctions I've ever been to, and I've been to many.
The only things I was interested in were the Blast Cities and the Virtua Fighter (for the monitor). The VF sold for $200 and the monitor wasn't exactly spectacular-looking, and I couldn't justify a 4th Blast City in my living room, so I went home with nothing. One weird thing to note was there weren't many late 80's, early 90's stuff at all, save for a broken Shinobi (LOL dedicated) and a broken NARC. A severe shortage of classics as well.

Did anyone take prices? I usually do, but after I went to lunch, Stacie and I decided not to return.

This was my first auction where I got to catch the whole thing. I thought it was fairly fun to see. Sounds like I would love a bigger one then. I wanted to bid on the Blitz2000, but got a bit too high for me. Things did seem to be a bit higher and in worse condition than I expected though.

The main reason I wanted the Blitz was because it ran but had problems, I was kind of excited at the thought of getting to do a little work on it to make it nicer.

Ah well, probably for the best, I still havn't even been able to finish my first MAME machine. I gotta try to finish that up this week before I dive into another project  ;D

Was my first auction and wasn't too impressed with it.  Was nice to meet some of the regulars, and sorry I missed meeting a few of you.  Game selection was pretty weak, and as mentioned they were going for more than I was willing to pay.  Was thinking about the NGG but went a little over my target price.. Not a bad price mind you, but wasn't ready to pull the trigger on it.  No one here got it did they?  Seemed like a couple guys grabbing most of the pins.
Not sure if I'll be going to others if the trend continues to be like that... we'll see what happens.

Like everyone else I was disappointed at the auction.  Did I hear them announce they wouldn't be back until November?  Five months between auctions?  Does a November auction mean no december auction?

It was great to meet lots of the guys.

Yeah we're all noobs! I have to change that.

Well we at least backed off from bidding $200 on it, heh!

One good thing about bad auctions.. not having to drag anything home.

Did anyone get prices? I got pics and will post them later... I got a few prices but gave up after half of the first row..

Prices seemed high, but probably because the selection was so poor. That Shinobi was either an iRobot or a Firefox style cabinet which means it would have been worth at least 10x more had it not been converted, but them the breaks.  But yeah a really odd selection this time. I think all the 'good stuff' went to Winston-Salem. Why on earth would a company schedule two auctions in the same 'general' region the same day??

That's actually positive as it means they are coming back (I figured the threats were just that).

They normally don't have auctions over the summer so the 5 month doldrum is pretty normal. We used to get at least 2 fall auctions (ie september or october and then november or december) but I'm just happy if we get one.

Someone has said earlier that they were pulling out of Florida.  I wonder if they are just finising the contract with the Fairgrounds, thus the lack of decent stuff?  What percentage of the merchandise does SA actually bring themselves?  Maybe the plan is to replace the Florida dates with the W/S dates, thus the same auctions on the same day?

Most of the items at the auction are brought in by locals. Rob would bring his own stuff from time to time (especially the slots.. but the container load) but I'm not sure if they bring anything at all these days. The fear is with the dwindiling amount of items and prices that eventually it won't be worth it for them to come to Orlando at all but to just stop at Atlanta or W/S. Most of your big time operators (the ones that bring the majority of games to the auction anyway) will send trucks up to Georiga or Carolina so Super Aucitons may not be out that much revenue. But obviously that would suck for us so we're all hoping it doesn't happen but it very well may eventually.

As Dan was saying at the auction though, this slump might just be due to some market issues and apparently all the regions are down so it's not like Orlando is just un-naturally bad or something. It could all bounce back by the fall auction.. well back to normal crap levels instead of crap-crap levels anyway :)

And that animated gif is driving me nuts man, can you just make it a static signature? thanks! :)

I was traveling north last week and made it a point to go to the Winston-Salem auction on the way back home. The Winston-Salem auction is run by Auction Game Sales, the Orlando auction is run by Super Auctions. These two companies compete feriously, to say the least. Thus far Auction Games sales has simply kicked ass on Super Auctions in the south east. Yesterday was a little smaller auction than usual in Winston Salem, maybe 700-800 items in the auction. Super Auctions should not schedule auctions head to head with Auction Games Sales. For example, Russo from Apollo Games sales from the Tampa area was in force at Winston Salem, they bought at least two trucks full of games. Why? Because the auction in Orlando NEVER makes as much money for sellers as the auctions up north. The last two auctions in Florida, the Birmingham Vending and the one at the fairgrounds, the auctioneers announced this would be the last year in Florida for Super Auctions. I asked JR, the old dude auctioneer, about this one on one, and he thought this was a scare tactic to get people motivated to get to the Florida auctions. It doesn't sound like it's working! He also told me they had found a new site in Atlanta that would be used for the next Atlanta auction. Every auction I've been to in Orlando I got some great deals. I hope they come back there again too.

I wish we got the games the NC auction got.  I probably would have ended up with one or two if that was the case.  Comparing the prices though, Orlando brought in more on the AP and NGG I believe... I think those were the only 2 similar pins.

Hello Guys,

Disappointed with the ORL, SA as well.

Really tough day for buyers and good day for mid-range sellers.

I can't recall the last time prices 'held' the entire auction.  Usually people leave or the big items are nasty cheap etc.  People (newbies) stayed and there were a lot of operators and collectors looking for project machines to flip or keep.

Prices were a good 20-30% higher across the board on average.  I know some went for more but I ripped up my bidder sheet about 1/2 way through the auction and bid to buy something.

Prices:

Touchscreens -
JVL 07.5  = 1,500
Megatouch Force (tube) = 500 avg. (** see notes below)
Megatouch U/R, Chip based, bad monitor = 135
Megatouch Maxx, XL (Titanium) = all over the place.

Cocktail:
Only one - Harley Davidson Theme Cocktail - 1,800

Minis:
Space Invaders - 200 and some change, bad lower monitor glass, cabinet scared me like it appeared to have termites.

Missle Command:
340 +/- ten bucks.  That was a nice looking MC with very nice side art.  I thought this was one of the best games there.  Needed a trackball rebuild but worked and looked good.  Not a bad price if you like MC.

Paul got one of the 1st good deals of the day on a 25" Simpsons bowler for 125??  Almost got the bid raised but hammer fell.  Good deal Paul.

Flip to 2nd row: (mostly dead)
The Trons went for a lot.  Really alot.  They both were missing the main PCB and the West one had bad parts (bezel, art) while the east one had what looked like a bad cabinet (mites?) and good parts.

U/R Offroad challenge had bottom right water damage and particle swelling and got alot.

to be continued . . . (15 min)

:)) Big Al

I'm back,

So, 2nd row was mostly dead or problem machines.

I bought a (dedicated :))  ) Racin Force with pedal problems for 240.

Tried to post link but couldn't as system is new.  See KLOV, really a fun game.

Great looking monitor and game has 3 different tracks.   Actually a very fun game.  Looks like a good earner for my route.  It has a lot of playability to it.  I like the Offroad series but they are so oversaturated - how about some variety instead of the same 'ole.  We'll se how it does.

Bought a really dead Ms. Pac with no monitor chassis, willis pac cp, and misc. to be determined board for 150  - yikes!

Bought 33" G/T showcase w/ monitor probs for 125.

Overall a very tough day for buyers.  You had to overbid to get it.

I almost didn't go b/c of the last few auctions and seriously talked to my wife about just going to Winston/Salem.

In re: lack of equipment.

I don't see the SA semi's anymore.  I always remember getting some machines when the semis are around.  Even last year I remember seeing the SA semi's which I think trucked games in.  Now, it seems its just consignments period.

** NOTES **

Every auction has a theme, so here's my nickel. . .

I can't believe how many people bought 'problem games'.  Not collectors, but buyers!!!

Example, there were at least 3-4 Megatouch Force (tube) that had a dim picture.  That means the monitor chassis needs an overhaul.  Even for an experienced PCB repair person, this is a tough fix.  Merit Force boards aren't something to 'practice' on.  A dim Force tube means 250 min. plus.   So, your 500 Force + tax and buyer fee = 500 + 20% = 600.  Then add 250 or more for a service call so you're at 850.  I guarantee you'll see some cheap dead Force machines on Craigslist soon for 500 (the amount they paid and now want to recoup).  Some were so close near monitor failure it wasn't even funny.

Other games had monitor issues yet people bid it up big even though the problem was obvious.

Those Tron buys were nuts!!  Really what did they go for?? (someone get a hammer on those)

Over and over I see people with the 500 or 600 'spening limit' especially lately.   They don't care what they buy they just want it for under a certain $ amount.  They don't want fantastic they want 'craptastic'.  Don't get me wrong here, I buy project games all day.  Matter of fact most of my collection is not mint but when you try to buy anything and have such a price obstacle your aching for a hurtin' - especially at a commercial auction!

Overall, auction was tough, but I had a great time seeing everyone.  Wish I woulda' had more time to shoot the BS as I didn't get to say hello to everyone.

Funny: (I guess)
As most of you guys know I ususally always wear flip flops (long story). Anywho, I was moving the 33" Showcase and dropped it square on my left foot - no protection, open toe flip flop.  :))

Think about how big they are and how much they weigh, needless to say I can barely walk and have a very bad looking toe.

Well, very nice to see everyone again and of course,

Happy Gaming,
Big Al

I wanted to go but missed this one. I was hoping to maybe purchase, but wasnt going to be able to get a truck to bring, so I decided to stay home. As usual the thing that holds me back from bidding on pins (Ive made 1 bid in about 10 auctions for a pin) but what holds me back is the horror stories about getting gutted junk out of these pins. Im still too much of a novice to know what im bidding on, and id rather spend a little more $$ and buy with confidence off of a private seller.

Did anyone get pin prices?

I think you get people who just have to go home with something. As long as it's within their budget they're happy to win something even if it's a pile. I really, really wanted something this time 'round but as you noted it was mostly just junk and the prices were high so I walked away.. dissapointed, sure but its better than buying junk. I think there's a lot of people out there especially new collectors who haven't learned that lesson yet. (Admittedly it took me awhile to learn that myself..)

Yeah Numsisix.  I agree as well.

I spent the entire Birmingham Vending auction looking for pieces and ready to buy but the pieces I wanted had issues that were a really big roll of the dice.  I finally found something I wasn't looking for but you know how that goes.

I guess I just posted to agree with you that going home from a SA with nothing can be satisfying in a twisted way.

Thanks again for getting the forum back up on the weekend nonetheless - sure missed it.

Here's my comments, posted on pinball bash yesterday and in the other (wrong area) or this site...HERE'S where it belongs! :)

Trons were I think $250 and $175 respectively...and the $250 one was missing a board I noticed when looking in the back.  Big Al...I guess now you have a big TOE to go with your name.  Sorry to hear that, it must have been right after I left (you didn't have a limp at that point)   I thought the auction guys were going to move it for you...sorry to hear about the foot, hope you feel better ASAP.

Jeff

<<
So, went to the Orlando Super Auction this morning, the consensus was with mostly everyone that it pretty much sucked.  Only thing worthwhile was the nice CV that sold for $800.    Besides that it was crappy.  Yeah, you know I'm j/k Thomas!     Wow, I really like all of Dave's funny faces and guys, those rock!

Anyway, Leon/ Ibis took down all the prices, I'm sure he'll post soon if he hasn't already on RGP that I haven't seen yet.  Short list I can recall...AP, WCS, WCP, Lost in Space (Don't know if anyone would get "LIS"!), No Good Gofers, 3 x Hook (WTF?), 2 x Sharky's Shootout, Bally Star Trek that couldn't get credits on, Captain Fantastic couldn't get credits on, Black Knight turned on but couldn't boot up (Dan/ CNFuzzy got this one for $125 though, great deal if he can get it going, even though badly worn playfield...and an EM with termite damage, in, out, through, and even covered with sheet metal...big POS that still sold for $175...big WTF?

"LIS" had a few people interested including me if it sold cheap.  It was very nice shape, EX really, played great...but it was kinda boring and considered sucky...and so it STILL sold for $1,600...another WTF.  AP looked pretty nice also, maybe around $1,300 ballpark...NGG around $1,600 that had a few indents on playfield from vertical ramp going up and down and indenting.  So, about 25 pins total, you people in China didn't miss anything.

It's mostly because Batman went the night before and bought up all the games so nobody else could get any... but I left Drexel that nice EM and he didn't jump on it. Smiley

2 rows of vids, nothing spectacular...Galaga selling for $500...more WTF. Deer Hunter games were $190 and $250... the typical Blast City cabs were around $250-$300.  Just wait for Leon to post everything!  Let's here from some of the other Villagers there...CNFuzzy, Ibis, Drexel, BigAl, Murfe... numbersix was there, but he better not take time to post and get back to work on the site! Smiley

Jeff

...and of course there was a South Park pin there, Dave.  Really. Don't remember the price, maybe $1,250?

Oh yeah, forgot about Charlie being there also (sorry Charlie)...and of course Curly was there too.  It was great finally meeting both Charlie and Greg/ Drexel...consider yourselves initiated!

..Mike/ Ratslif...sorry I'm old and tired...can't remember everyone... sorry if I left anyone else out!

 <<Hey Jeff,

Thanks for the posts and the digs.....

I watched the CV just to see if I got a good deal. Glad I did not miss much!

Talk soon...

Thomas  >>

<<
The Ap was playing well during the preview period and then has an error activated during the auction on the DMD.  The South Park was decent looking, missing the topper.  I am pretty sure they were both sells and not buybacks.  The owners were standing there bidding against the nubees.

Leon (Ibis) has the results, he should be posting them at some point.

Re: the sucky auctions and not having another until Nov...

well, the problem MAY be that the auctions are too close together with only a few months in between. A little more space between them would probably create a bigger stock of games for auctions that are only here say twice a year.  With auctions you never know what will be there, hard to predict if it will have a ton of games you might want or not...that's why we all STILL go, isn't it?  The ONE time you DON'T go will be when they have that game you've been searching for forever and sold dirt cheap.  It will suck having to wait so long between auctions (I'm sure it won't stop some of us from buying things until then anyway...) but it may work out better to have a larger quantity of items, and hopefully better quality as well.

Even thought there wasn't much at the auction I thought I did pretty good.

I got a pretty big ass cabinet with Simpson's bowling in it for $100. It has a 27in monitor in it I think. The trackball did not work at the auction. When I got it home the ground wire had pulled out of the trackball. I wired in the ground and everything works perfect. It has a really nice picture.

My brother was wanting a cabinet to put a 48-1 in for his small but up and coming game room. He got the one cabinet with a 25 in monitor and the game it had in it was Invasion or something like that. At the auction the monitor would just come up red. When we got it home I put TMNT board in it and the monitor came up perfect so the issue was the board. He paid $75 for it. He was pretty happy.

PS Dan I made it home ok.

Murf, sounds like yours worked out well, on both machines, the Invasion one could well be a bad hard drive, if its PC based board then could be a bad component, either way should make for a good 48 in 1 machine  :)

How did you wrestle the cheapo machines away from Kevin (Funky Chunky Monkey)?

He's notorious for the $5 bid and never paying over $100.

Murf,

that's great to hear on your games, congrats!  That sounds like the best score of the day!  And yeah...the chunky Monkey guy was pointed out to me also...I noticed him kinda weaving and bobbing between people while bidding was going on for a few things, don't know if that's a strategy of some kind, or blocking people's view, blocking bidding, annoying people...or what?  Hopefully none of the above and he didn't realize what he was doing... but looked like he had ants in his pants.

I am almost 100% sure I saw that Missle Command in Winter Haven Saturday afternoon.  There was a service truck, open bed with a lift gate with a MC in the back on Overlook Drive and Cypress Gardens Blvd.  What are the chances?

I checked out the auction as well since it was my first one in FL. Was not really impressed with the selection but interesting to say the least!
Came back last nite from a long road trip from Naples to Maryland then to auction then back to Naples.Good thing is that I picked up a absolutely mint Firefox(MD) and just got online to find out the server crashed? Now my babe avatar is gone?
That Gofers was really nice I have to say!
Will be going to Curly's to check out his collection and meet some folks as well! :)

Thanks for getting the prices! I only stayed for the first half or row one so I only got a handful myself.

No problem, I enjoy doing it, but sometimes it gets a little mundane and tedious.

Yeah it does. One thing I do like is how they started writing down the hammer price on the auction decal. This not only protects you from getting screwed after the fact (ie getting hit for a price higher than your actual winning bid, which does sometimes happen) but it makes writing prices down later a lot easier.. just walk down the row.. :)
