Just because you add 2k worth of aftermarket crap to a machine does not make your machine worth 2k more then market.
That is all. :P
-
What is " If I put all kinds of after market junk on my already expensive pin, will people pay a whole lot more money for it so I make a tidy profit?"
" That is absolutely correct, Tufnel!!!"
"Ok Let's try Spookey Pinball waiting list deposits on unseen junk games for 400 Dollars Alex"!
"DING DING DING!!! Thats the Dailey Double TUFF!!!!" ;D ;D

So a Tron pinball with no toys is not valued at $7,000 ?
Then a Tron pinball with toys is not valued at $7000 ?

Oh Im just venting because every time I find someone willing to sell a game i want they want way too much.
Usually because it has all kinds of mods and crap I could care less about like ugly ass powder coating or some dopey topper.
There are only a few things that actually "add value" to machines... most mods are a money pit.
Maybe its all the newer people in the hobby but the perception seems to be if I spent a grand on a bunch of stuff its now worth a grand more which isnt the case.

Please don't misinterpret my words here, I totally applaud what you posted.
Now Neil's post makes my head spin. He does make a point there though, I think. What the point is Im not sure but he definately made one intended to make the reader think about the state of MODS in this Country.
Maybe what we need is a thread to point out some of the things that are going on out there in the world pf pinball that seem to be based on nonsense. Now, I dont think mods are totally bullshit and a joke, BUT a lot of them sure are. Plus they clutter up the overaall impression made by the playfield and turn a good looking game into a Barbie and Ken doll house.
Then of course there is that niggling little price of a lot of these mods. I shall refrain from even commenting on that.
So please , if you wish to point out that there is something smelly about someone claiming it takes 15 flushes now to flush a toilet please do. I find it refreshing.
Maybe someday Ill write up a post about how all the 2 inch flipper, single player Gottlieb wedgeheads are all 3 or 4 thousand dollars now on EPAY. unrestored no less.

i would consider my stern licensed art blades & topper are at least worth 50% of retail, and i would expect the game to be worth 90% of retail... however, adding together will put the game at pretty much retail.. LOL... but that is what the game is going for...
unlicensed, aftermarket mods don't add value ( and they possible REDUCE value if they are hacked into the harness ) ... and to many of them reduce value... nobody want to look at your candy-land play-field of figurines that obscure all the views of ball travel.

In cases where there is a set value (Color DMD), or a properly installed factory upgrade (JJP Shaker Motor kit), I think it is more than fair to adjust prices accordingly, and is often a reasonable deal since it ignores installation time. I don't think many would argue that.
As for mods that have subjective value, such as aesthetic upgrades, they may add value for a subset of buyers, or even reduce value for others. Definitely not a given.
In other news, bolting parts onto cars or adding shiplap to your living room will probably not get you a 1:1 ROI either.
Edit: Now I really want to find a beater 1K pin and make it a personal mission to bolt as much stuff as possible onto the playfield before posting it on Pinside for sale at $20k under an alt account. Hmmmm. ;)

End of day when adding mods you are making the wild assumption that down the road someone else will care and want to pay something for it
For people like myself who could care less its always a problem.
color DMD? dont care, topper? dont care, super "rare" repainted figures from walmart or comiccon? really dont care :P
Outside of HD glass and shakers i dont really see anything adding else value and at least those are easily removed.

stern toppers = spare node boards :D
-
the motors that shake and the inside the cabinet blades I think get aa pass as they are good to have . Im talking about that 132 different sign that say "BEWARE OF WALKERS or something........
-
colorDMD adds value, usually $375 dollars worth.
i add toys to my game, no LEDs drilled into eye sockets, no blinky blinky gold volkswagen bus, no hacking into my 555 socket. my toy is worthless to you.
but it makes me happy. :P
and hamster screwed up the formula:
stern licensed art blades & topper are at least worth 50% of retail
i would expect the game to be worth 90% of retail... however, adding together will put the game at pretty much retail.. LOL... but that is what the game is going for...
stern toppers double in value. art blades retain 66% of value. the game is never worth 90% of retail until POSSIBLY. 3 years later. you drive a new game off the lot, you lose 20% until the upswing happens. and some special games never get that upswing. :)
