Hurricane Prepping
« on: September 07, 2017, 10:55:37 PM »
Since this is not a normal storm, besides the standard items of medicines, food, water and personal papers, thought I'd add in extra items I've prepped for.  Maybe the list of things might spark an idea of something you might need to get before it's too late to shop for it.  I also take care of rental properties, so I got a few things for others as well...

Large cube ice 10lbs
LED rechargeable flashlights, 8 hours between charging, Harbor Freight $24
LED solar motion lights, place in dark rooms without power, run panel outside, can run 3 hours, HF
LP gas tank, for stove or grill emergency cooking
Chain saw, extra chains, I have both electric and gas depending on needs, mixed gas/oil cans
Generator, 10 gauge cords, splitters, power cords and gas/oil cans
UPS for electronic needs to keep internet, tv/cable box alive
Battery chargers
RV battery, for spare or jumping others when needed (prevents damage to my vehicle's system)
Plywood, 2x4's, 4x4's, drywall screws
Roof repair, spray foam, tar/sealer, tar paper, roofing nails/screws, plastic sheeting 6 mil (10x25 min) and tarps
Fans, portable room a/c's
PVC assorted sizes of pipes, caps, T's, joiners and glue
Power Inverter 400-600 watts for vehicle, to recharge phones, laptops, etc

Did I miss anything?  I tend to over prep, but I keep receipts to return things no longer needed.

I don't run extension cords all over the place from the generator, I shut the main breaker off on the panel and backfeed it.
Runs my lights, fans, two fridges, tv and internet.
I also have an antenna for one TV if cable is out

Fill any empty space in your freezer/fridge with water bottles.  It will stay cold longer in case of power outage.  Also, if you are evacuating, freeze a water bottle half full of water, then turn it upside down and leave it in the freezer.  If the ice is still at the bottom of the bottle when you return, you know the freezer stayed cold.

Back in 2004 I ran 3 refrigerators, a window AC,  lamp, CRT TV, cable modem, and laptop off a 5K watt Coleman.  Yeah, it was straining, but it did it.
