LF Skate or Die 720
« on: October 01, 2019, 01:37:49 PM »
I have a friend looking for one of these.  I have looked on the board, and they seems to be fairly rare and not inexpensive.  I informed my friend of the comments I have seen here and he asked to to put up a post to see if anyone was aware of a game available for sale.  He is in the West Palm Beach area, but could have picked up pretty much anywhere in Florida.  Thanks for any help or guidance you can offer.

Ron

720 is such a weird game price wise.

When you want one you'll have to pay $1k+ it seems

HOWEVER when one used to come up for sale in general or at auction.. it was like $250

It's uncommon but not super rare so there should be some out there.

Number Six is right. 1k at least.

The last few I've seen sold were 1,800+ with restored examples going for 3,000+. That's not to say there aren't still some bargains out there, but they had a run up a couple years back. The good news is that they do come up for sale regularly, but much more often on the West Coast.

The game has a few things that make pricing one weird. A niche following, unique (and expensive) controls, uncommon med res CRT, the boom box housing on top...

If he doesn't find one, you're both welcome to take a drive up to the Space Coast and play mine (and the other games) anytime. I'll keep an eye out as well.

Thank you for a detailed response.  It is greatly appreciated.  I am not a collector of these, so insight from folks like you is very helpful.

I personally had passed on one in the last couple of years that was working for 350 (if I recall, the monitor was just slow to warm up) because it is one of the most difficult cabinets to move and handle. It has a unique cabinet shape and weight that is challenging to move/handle. Yes, the individual parts that make up the cabinet are expensive.  Also, don't worry about the medium resolution monitor in them if you find one that is not working. I've fixed and replaced old with new tubes on medium resolution monitors and it wasn't a big deal.

Yeah that's what's bizarre about this game. Like wsrainc said it's one of those niche/narrow appealing games. If one comes up for sale and nobody from that interested group is around.. it will go relatively cheap. However if you go looking for one specifically, dig deep.

What?! The tape deck glows?! Mine has never done that! Wow, mind blown (and more work ahead to fix).

All the best in your search. TRON and 720 were my absolute favorites as a kid thus I really wanted one. As was noted earlier, many years ago I ended-up having to ship my 720 from the West Coast.

i spoke with ron, i put these things at 2 grand. it is the right azz for the seat when you sell one though. but man....rare. i've seen more converted than original in my warehouse raids.

this is a game i dropped coin in back in the day. thankfully, i sucked at it...never wanted to own one.

I still suck at 720 and have looked at all of those high scores/medals for so many years. One day my name will be there... in the last spot, but still!   ;)

It is, though, little gems like finding out there is a lightbulb that can make one's day. Ta, Chris! I cannot wait until I get home and change the bulb out (or find out I have no correct bulbs and have to go to Home Depot).

Wonderful! One soft-white 16W bulb later and the tape deck is ALIVE! 😊 Thank you again!

You can find some cool lights to go in those traditional, screw in sockets. I bet some of those motion LED, kaleidoscope ones would look awesome.

Now if I can just get my gauntlet marquee to light up....

Ibis: I might have an extra set of side art and some of the chrome t moulding left over. If he's interested in either, let me know.

I'm right there with you. Loved the game, still suck at it. When I'd play it as a kid, I always wished I could just skate around the open world part indefinitely. That always felt way ahead of its time.

Fun story: The year I took this to FPF, I walked by while a guy was absolutely KILLING it. Gold in everything, multiple clears. He could do the glitch trick on the ramp and max out the score every time. I have never seen anyone just absolutely dominate the game like that in person. Had to tighten up the chain drive on the stick when he was done, but totally worth it! :)

I would love a shopped original cab of this game as well but they are so hard to find.  One of the last Orlando super auctions had a decent one for a few hundred dollars.  It needed work but I'm upset I didn't get that one.

John's (wsrainc) example is the nicest I've ever seen.
He did a wonderful job restoring it.
Gorgeous machine and I was a whole lot better at that game when I was younger. I totally suck at it now.
