Adam Sandler.. his movies were always stupid but for a period of time they were also fun despite this. Then at some point he just kinda turned into a joke and an unfunny one at that. A mindless parade of his buddies making movies that seemed like they were written by a not particularly witty 5th grade class yet somehow still managed to make enough money to spawn another one next year.
This time we're back for a sequel to arguably his best from the 'classic' period.. Happy Gilmore 2.
Out of the gate (minor spoiler) the film starts by Happy killing his now-wife from the first film, becoming an alcoholic and losing all of his money. I get that you need to reset the character in these sequels to give them an angle to build towards but this seemed a little bit harsh. That along with the casting of most of Sandlers real-life Family gave me Kevin Smith vibes.
Luckily it's not that bad nor is it as bad as his normal modern schlock.. but I wouldn't call it good either. It's a lot of member berries if nothing else. They reference just about every gag and character from the first film (substituting relatives for the dead cast members).. including a copious amount of clips from the original just in case you forgot. It's nice seeing some of the old characters especially Christopher McDonald back as Shooter McGavin but there's not really enough new stuff here to justify this as anything more than a nostalgia trip. In other words it's about the same level as the other recent spat of resurrected sequels so temper your expectations.
At nearly a 2 hour runtime there's also a lot of bloat and extraneous characters shoe horned in. It's possible with some editing this could have been tighter and maybe better. As it stands while it's not as bad as I feared it's not really good either. It's at best OK and mostly just like one of those TV movie reunions of a show that's been off the air for 30 years they used to do back in the day. It's Netflix so at least it probably won't cost you anything extra.
