talk to 10 HVAC guys, get 10 completely different stories.

a system running all day without turning off doesn't sound right. i wouldn't put up with that, unless i had it set to 62 on july 20th. sounds like an undersized unit, but i'm no a/c guy...just learned enough to keep from getting scammed by them.

i just put 2 large holes in my roof, added a turbine and a powered unit running off a thermostat. make much better attic ventilation, and that helps the house out in this rough summer. our roof was replaced in 2011, and that contractor is an idiot....we had better ventilation before he came in and put on the new roof...which sadly, we didn't need. dumb city ordinances.

You are so correct I talked to my a/c contractor when this thread started he said it is running correctly with the temperature
it is set at and running at 40% Humidity home humidity should remain between 30 and 45 percent.

He also said a unit running to long could be undersized  for the house even oversize will also cause a problem.

The new units are so efficient and the size of the outside unit towered over my old unit.

I also run my ceiling fans 24 7 in the summer months.

I bought a new AC system about a year ago and keep it set at 72 degrees, about 50% humidity.  For my 2000 square feet under air, my FPL bill was $240 last month, which is higher than I paid last summer.  However, I am also now running a portable AC unit in my Florida room 24/7 (have pins out there lol), so it's hard to tell if I am paying that much more for the house AC than I did last summer last summer.

I think the idea is running all day while maintaining ideal temp/humidity, but I think that's for maximum comfort, not necessarily cost savings.  I like the Ecobee thermostat for performance metrics and ability to use IFTTT to automatically set temps based on who is in the house.  Check your ceiling with a thermal imager.  I've got 3 rooms that get a bit hotter than the others.  Part of that is the side of the house they are on, but part of it is also the 2x2 square of missing insulation in each room.  I've read that missing even a small amount of insulation can make a big difference in performance.

I keep my central air on 73 degrees, 1800 sq ft house, also air runs constantly in 1100 sq ft shop, and also in Brads 400 sq ft shop. My bill last month was $401, which was $25 more than the same month last year, plus last year I used 4 more KWs. Yes, I feel the hike. I feel like K7 says putting another meter on the shop/gameroom, I know it would lower my KW rate, but I don't know if it would make any difference once you figure in the meter charge
