Monitor question
« on: July 13, 2020, 04:14:55 PM »
I'm new to monitor repair/replacement.  Appreciate any advice from those with more (in many cases, a lot more!) experience in this area.

I have a Well Gardner K4900 (5 pot) in my Gauntlet.  It's gone out.  I have a line on a replacement chassis, which I believe I can replace.  I understand there are 3, 4, and 5 pot variations.  What is the compatibility issue with these?  I understand they aren't interchangeable.  Is that interchangeability limitation with the tube, or the game board?  i.e. if I bought a tube + 3/4 pot version (assembled and working), would it work with my game?  Similarly, should I stick to K4900, or would a different version altogether work?

I'm likely just going to get a replacement 5 pot chassis and replace it, but curious and want to learn more about this piece of the hobby.

Thanks in advance,
Jason

Your best bet is to pull the chassis and send it off to someone like Paul400 that does repairs. They can make it new again by replacing all the worn out parts.

Happy to do that.  If I buy a 5-pot replacement, am I likely to have compatibility issues though?  Or are you suggesting a repair of this same chassis for economic and community reasons?  Just curious.

Thanks for the response and info.
Jason

Bit's very VERY good with board repairs.

if you want to learn it yourself, someone will answer. if you want to pack it and ship it, paul400 is very good with rebuilding the chassis's on these things.

i didn't know there was a 3, 4, or 5 pot difference. research says the 3 pot won't work for a 5 pot replacment.

the caps shouldn't matter on whatever version you have, but every k4900 i remember was 5 pot.

also, for gauntlet, any 19" Standard resolution CRT arcade monitor will work as a replacement. :)

Thanks K7!  I’m better with cabinet work than board repair, but have done some board work in the past.  I’m always interested in learning though :).  Im tempted to replace the tube, or the whole monitor setup... but will probably remove the chassis and get it repaired and recapped.

Thanks, as always, for the guidance and support.  Always amazed at the great folks on here willing to share their expertise.

k4900 is a great chassis, I would keep it and repair the chassis.  It is not the tube it is the yoke that is different, there is an early and later version which have to stay with the chassis. Send me the chassis , I can fix it no problem problem. You can always just swap in a whole new monitor.
taking on monitor chassis repair. wells gardner u2000, k7000 19 and 25 inch, k7201, k7203 , k4600, k4900, k7400, k7500 med rez. electrohome G0-7.. sanyo ez20
I can also build complete monitors with fresh burn free tubes.
