Its is pretty funny all the talk about how tired and old a theme Elvira would be..

You guys do know that they are about to put out the Wizard of friggen OZ right? Not sure it gets any older or more tired then that as far as themes go.

Whats next... Ben Hur or Fiddler on the Roof?

What "message" does that put out?

If he wanted to do another classic movie theme, I'd go for Casablanca, personally.

Oh, and if anyone ever announces a "Twilight" pin, I have $20 to put into the "arson fund" to burn their factory down.

No doubt that WOZ is a risky choice. I think both WOZ and Elvira are "long in the tooth"...no doubt.

That said, I see 2 big differences:

#1: WOZ is a family-oriented classic/timeless film with mass appeal. Not true for Elvira.
#2: WOZ hasn't been done before. Elvira has 2 pins.

I think WOZ is going to be a stunning/challenging game with just the right degree of modernization/innovation. If so, I'm confident the WOZ theme won't bring it down. Can't wait to get mine.

#3: Two major motion pictures coming out in the next 24 months based on the Oz theme.
#4: Old to the point of becoming timeless, ala Mickey Mouse, Coca-Cola, etc.
#5: On television constantly, replays, remakes, etc.   The Wiz (black Oz) was just on over the weekend.

While WOO wouldn't have been my choice for a license, it's really in no way comprable to Elvira.  Just totally different in every way.

Good points! Yet another is the success of Wicked on Broadway (which is still very hot).

I don't think you will find everybody is jumping on the "oh, boy! WOZ is coming out" bandwagon.

Whenever a new pin is coming down the pike, some (not all) of the guys that preordered are going to express over-excitement with no basis other than it is a bit silly to say "Hey I am spending 6k on what may be the worst game ever!"  However, there are going to be many of us that wait and see what the game really has to offer.

I for one am on record for wanting JJP to succeed, but I can't say I am excited for a WOZ game. When I see it, and play it in person, I may change my mind.  I did with LOTR.

Same thing with many of Stern's decisions. I want Stern to succeed, but my response to many games is "Really, that is the license you chose?"

And if by some chance Elvira comes back around for a 3rd time, my gut instinct will be "oh, brother", but I may change my mind playing it in person.

fwiw, this is the first NIB pin I've ever bought without playing it first (in general, I agree with your "play before pay" rule).

I'm also not a fanboy of new pins in general...in fact, I'm usually more cynical about the newer pins (given the lack of places to play outside the home).

All that said, after speaking to JJ for a couple hours and hearing about the team he was assembling I decided to take a leap of faith. Since JJ is raising the price after this month, it seems like the Emerald City Edition is selling well. Supporting the development of a new pin (and company) is a worthwhile investment for me. Probably still lower risk than the stock market and a hell of a lot more fun:-)

I am hoping to get some time on it when you get it.  JJP may gain another customer that way :)

I agree with all that.. the only thing I was talking about is the theme. It is based on a movie that came out in 1939 (and it is based on the movie literally, nada to do with anything after)

No joke... 1939. before pinball with flippers, way before color TV, even before WW2 pretty much.

I don't get it theme wise at all. Not sure what demographic they are shooting for but its not pinball enthusiasts. Could be jersey jack just loves the movie and that right there is enough seeing how its his $$.

I do however hope it is the best game ever made.. I really do.

I would like to possibly be able to buy the next one and have an alternative to whatever Stern is doing as much as anyone.

I believe you guys finally stumbled onto JJP's logic for his launch game.   A theme with the broadest general appeal (not motorcycles, superheros, robots, monsters) because you want to draw new, non-pinball players to the game.  There's around 500 million of those themes already out there, and guess what?  Less players every year.   You coddle the existing players and enthusiasts with full-feature packed playfields and deep, varied rulesets they can't ignore no matter how much they might not care for the theme.   You broaden your general market and appeal with innovation, historically display innovation, and a big color lcd was long overdue.

I don't know if it's a recipe for success, but it's more innovation and creative thinking than we've seen in a decade.  The theme isn't what I would've picked, but it may be more successful than any I would've picked also.   Would any of you in 1991 have honestly picked a kooky old black and white series from the 60's's updated movie as your choice for a theme?   Not a chance.  I think we would've seen 100 post threads telling us how crazy Lawlor and Sharpe were if RGP existed like it does now.

Who knows?  We'll see soon enough.  It's certainly a more exciting year in pinball than last year, right?  And that's a good thing.  :)

I think it is fair to say that back then, now, and tomorrow, that more pinball guys (and guys in general) are into The Addams Family than the Wizard of Oz and would much rather hum along with The Addams Family theme song and snap their fingers twice than sing "We're Off to See the Wizard" or "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" and click their heels together.

Take a poll.

LOL  Yes, yes we've quite established that pinheads in general do not like "Somewhere over the Rainbow" by now.  That wasn't the point.

Here are just a handful "out of the box" renditions of the classic, timeless tune...

Somewhere over the Rainbow (Rock) - Kingdom Hearts
Yngwie Malmsteen-Somewhere Over the Rainbow
Jeff Beck - Somewhere Over the Rainbow
Somewhere Over The Rainbow - Ray Charles
Somewhere Over The Rainbow - Katharine McPhee (AI5 Finale)

Might not strike a chord with pinheads, however has huge mass/musical appeal.
