GPS recomendations
« on: July 20, 2011, 04:32:22 PM »

I'm looking to buy a GPS unit in the next week or so but have no clue about all the differences. They range in price from $100 to over $400 and this isn't something I'll be using all the time, just on a couple of upcoming trips or when I have to make a drive to pick up a far away game. So do the $100 or so units work just fine or are they junk?

well I have a very out of date TomTom, wife has the new model which comes with lifetime map updates, and lifetime real time traffic, which is a major bonus as the cost of maps can get expensive, and the real time traffic works well, I had a Nokia one for a short while, which would allow you to play mp3's, watch movies and that, but its GPS wasnt up to TomTom

this is the one the wife has

and for price it seems very good

Like I said it's not something I'll use every day and I don't need MP3 or bluetooth or any of that. That is why I don't see the point in spending over $200 if the cheaper models work just as well.

i have a very early TomTom One...it serves it's purpose very well. free map updates. a few hacked add-ons (beevis&butthead voiceover). the gravestones and McDonald logos that pop up always make me laugh, especially when they're close to each other. also handy to plan routes around traffic jams, road blocks, etc.

also use trapster...set up to give me a 500 yard warning before any red light camera intersection in florida...just enough time to hit the switch:

I really never even thought about them having hacks but I guess anything does now a days.

As for your switch don't they still know it is you by the game hanging out the back?  ;D

Also thanks for your input Mick. I have been looking at the Tom Toms in the $100-$150 range and just wanted to make sure they weren't rubbish.

Lol at Chris' Batman license plate cloaking device.  I swear someday they're gonna bust you and there will be plenty of games for the taking around Southeast FL for a LONG time. :)

As for the GPS, I thought about getting one a few years ago, and decided for the hell of it to check if there was a free app for my Sprint phone.  There was, and still is, and I'm sure for any other phone or service provider.  Since I'm cheap and don't need it all that much, it works great for me and does everything I need, so you might want to look into that.  Plus, I always have it everywhere I go, since it's in my phone, so it's mobile and multi vehicle! :)

Not all of us can have a bat-signal to tell us where to go.   ;D

My phone is a work phone though and it won't do any of that fancy stuff and I'm not getting a monthly phone bill to be able to use GPS or surf the web or any of that. My phone is for calls, I hate when people text me and then I have to use the keys to respond. Just give me a call and say what you need to, takes less time. My phone is not smart at all.

the downside as well of using GPS on your phone, it sucks the battery in no time, and also smaller screen, and when your in the middle of directions and someone calls and you then loose your directions!  >:(

so whilst you can use it, sometimes a dedicated GPS is easier

Well, it was a free app anyway, so works well for my needs.  My phone is fairly outdated by now since about 5 years old, but at least got the state of the art basics for THEN which include crappy camera, video, and web browsing.  The small screen not a big deal, since I put in my ear piece and listen as I drive.  And phone call interuption not so often, since not many people have my batphone number besides the commissioner and Robin...and the commish died years ago, and who knows where the hell Robin is.  He's probably the one trying to text my all the time, the reason I blocked texts!  I'm with you HFK, just friggin CALL me!

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that also...I definitely keep the car charger handy if using it for long periods of time.  Also, I keep in mind WHEN I'm using it, as if it's before 7pm it's burning up my standard cell phone minutes (after 7pm they're free, so that works for me since I'm not awake and on patrol until around then anyway).
