Playfield cleaning 101 questions
« on: January 25, 2012, 07:09:15 AM »
I wish to clean and wax my Bad Cats. What cleaner and wax should I use? Is it OK to wax over the mylar? Best way to get the grim/dark line off the edge of where the mylar ends, without damaging the mylar. And any other tips welcomed, as I have no idea what I'm doing.
I was looking at Millwax pinball playfield cleaner, anyone used it?

I use Pinnacle Brazilian carnauba wax. Made for autos, but works great on all my PF's.

I've also used Millwax and had great results...particularly on very dirty PF's. For new PF's and PF's that have been restored/cleaned, you shouldn't need Millwax.

I know it's kinda a dumb post, but this BC is in nice condition and don't want it to end up in the hall of shame cuz of a what may seem like the right thing to do.

use novus 2 to clean entire playfield. I usually do several runs of novus 2 but its up to you and depends how dirty machine is. After doing novus 2 use novus 1. I would do a couple passes of novus 1 as it ensures you get all of the novus 2 off. Novus 1 will make the playfield nice and shiny also the more passes you do with novus 1 will help shine the mylar. As for wax I use Turtle carnuba wax. Make sure you dont get the one with a cleaner in it as it can damage the playfield

this is what I have used on all my machines.

It will go on foggy but once you buff it, it looks awesome

Ok, here's my from dirt to shiny list.

First, use concentrated Simple Green on the playfield to remove grime, dirt, old wax, and nastiness.

For really tough spots get a Magic Eraser or major ball swirls, cut it into 2" x 1" x 1" strips, dab it with as close to 100% isopropyl alcohol as you can find (you should be able to find 93% commonly in drug stores), and rub with medium pressure in small circular motions around the wear. Pay close attention -- especially in areas where there is paint lifting or flaking -- and make sure you don't start pulling paint off with it. It's a very soft form of sand paper so to much force will damage a playfield (although I've never had any issues). The Eraser will leave a white residue behind which can be cleaned easily with another application of Simple Green.

Now it's time to Novus #2 the playfield. Work it over very well and then wipe off the residue. You can tell if there's still Novus left if the playfield feels tacky or sticky. Buff until it feels smooth and has a little bit of glisten.

Finally, hard Carnauba wax available from any auto supply store. Stay away from liquid. Wax it, wait 5 minutes, buff it. Redo. After that you should have an extremely clean, shiny, and high-speed table once again.

As far as wax goes I swear by Mothers, sort of expensive but worth every penny.

I was looking at Millwax pinball playfield cleaner, anyone used it?

I have some, seems similar to Novus and used to be the de-facto was for playfields.  However, I've read a lot comments that recommend to stay away from petroleum based products due to yellowing over time, and Millwax falls square into that category.

Don,

that game was very well cared for and kept in nice shape by the past 2 owners, so it probably needs VERY little, just a slight touch up.  I'm sure an annual coat of carnauba wax (I personally prefer Maguire's) is likely all it needs to make it sparkle, but at most hit it first with Novus #2 (if it even needs it) and then carnauba wax to put a nice protective coat on it (should do this annually or semi annually to your playfields, depending on how much you play)... then change the rubbers and it should be sparkly again.  Stuff like Simple Green/ Windex might be OK to get initial grime or horsefeed  :P :)  off of something you find in a barn, but don't even consider it for that Bad Cats.

Novus 2 to clean and any carnuba wax after. Magic eraser just takes off the clear coat, avoid using it, might as well use laquer thinner, NOT. Anything with chemicals in it (simple green, windex) can get under clearcoats and should be avoided or used sparingly. Millwax sucks.
My opinion (40 years in woodworking business) Bob

ps.   Sounds like this playfield just needs a good waxing.

Yes, it's in super nice condition! I've been looking for this game in this condition for over 12 years!! I'm super happy that Brian sold it to me.
With that said, this game is like one of my kids.. I have put over 200 games on it in about 2 months. Sorry about your 3rd place score :P but you can reclaim it at GW!!!
I'm going to white glove this machine...
