what to do engine wise on Mustang
« on: April 27, 2012, 01:30:21 PM »
so the 1969 Mustang is mere weeks from being out of the body shop, the car has what appears to be its Original 1969 engine , the engine does not smoke or have any oil leaks , but then again I don't know much  about this engine other then its original, not sure when or if its been rebuilt, I can probably get a rebuilt engine for around $2000 , but  then it would not be original, any insight people ?

Thanks

Herman

Time to break out the popcorn.

Another thread where people offer advice that is ignored?

Me, rebuild it and spice it up a little. Or you could drop a new Ford diesel in there.  ;)

not sure it matters about originality now that you have painted it a 2010 color, so fuck it, get another bigger badder engine (as I have already told you) forget about the pins for a while, focus on making the mustang a real car, can always pick up a cheap pin down the road, OR you might actually realise once they are gone, as you didnt play them, you dont miss them ???

if you have the ORIGINAL engine, and it doesn't SMOKE, and runs good, then DON'T F* WITH IT!

The Original NUmber's Matching Engine is worth 10X anything you put in there.

also, you shouldn't own something you dont know how to work on, expecially that old, as the mechanics who do know anything about them are all retired now.

well that is the question, i know of 302's that range in price form 1500 rebuilt to 6k with all the fixings , , not looking for a radical ride , just looking for a car that you can jump into and feel safe driving 100 miles in  there is one 302 listed on CL for 2k he has all the accessories i guess it was a 89 5.0 that has been bored out .30 so it s basically a 306 has a few other ad ons prob bumping the hp to 310  it has been cleaned , bored , acid bathed  , like i said just looking to jump in the car and enjoy it , only thing holding me back is the block is  89 and not a 69

what he said.

if you HAVE to replace the motor, have it pulled and rebuilt by a reputable machine shop. They can do everything to that block that you mentioned above, and you will still have the original motor and it will cost less than buying one already rebuilt

Yeah, i would love trade you my fms crate motor for a pin or two, but that would not be fair to your car, if your engine is running fine, no smoke, starts easy, i wouldn't touch it, maybe do a "fresh'n" up, ie, repaint, gasket kit, new belts, etc. no need to do a full rebuild..

If your engine is good I would for the most part leave it alone. I would update the ignition to get rid of the points (or just make them carry a low voltage trigger). I have used and like the MSD 6AL. It also has a neat feature; if the box dies you can swap a couple of wires and run on the points again.
