I love German cars, and really was the only type we had in the UK, whether BMW, Audi or VW, never had a problem, always ran great, good reliable cars, sadly it seems all of those over here are plagued with issues, and build quality, im guessing all of them are built south of the border?

new design vw bugs are notorious for clunkers... i am surprised they still make them.

Wife drives a Lexus ES 330 (Camry with heavy makeup) bought new 9 years ago, reliable and comfy......
has been a great vehicle....knock on wood :D

Funny drove home an ES 330 this evening.

OK didn't buy it technically. They made up some reason to need to keep our trade in to 'see if their buyer would give a better deal' or some such so we got to 'borrow' the ES 330 overnight. Once again i'm sure a sales gimmick to make you loooove the car after you've driven home in it. Whatever. Wasn't going to sign without research or seeing the car in daylight.

On the plus side man this thing is cherry. Every possible upgrade you could think of. Seat warmers, seat coolers.. navigation system, 6-disc CD changer, adjustable everything.. even has this button you push to make a sun screen pop out the back for the back window. It's insane.

Downside.. the damned stereo doesn't play mp3s which kinda pisses me off. My scion is the same year and it does despite having power virtually nothing. Oh well, i'm kinda off mp3s of recent anyway and the 6 disc changer is probably enough but still kinda wtf given everything else. Stereo does sound amazing though. We also test drove a Q35 tonight same year.. man the lexus eats the car's lunch. Makes it look like a total POS at least on the amenities side of things.

The car is also a bit big, i'd prefer something sportier but given how the IS 250 only looks sporty and actually isn't i think the power of the ES 330 will be better than a car that looks faster but isn't. The IS300 is funner but older and more dogged out in most cases at this point.

Yosho also recommended the GS 300 line and the LS line. The LS line is nice but seems pricy. I admit the GS looks a lot nicer but i think its out of my price range as would either need to drop down to a 2002 or 2003 or step up to 100k+ miles which i'm not sure is worth it to me.. i think the ES 330 will be nice enough but depends on what kinda deal we arrive at tomorrow.

Supra is out of his price range
SC300/400 are too old for him
GS300/400/430 is what I suggested as well, but the cost of ownership will probably be a little less in the es330.
There's a nice gs430 over in Orlando for him to check out if he's interested... Looks loaded and in good shape.  Miles and price are fair and it's silver w/ black interior.  Only mod is tint.  I'd link it here, but the site doesn't seem to like it.

I think the Es330 is in the lead though (at the moment) and would be a very nice daily.

Es330 is probably the best option after talking with six about it... The trade in of the VW makes it more important to use a larger dealer.  Gs430s are too hard to find... Es330s are still plentiful, so dealerships have to compete.

Well yeah we had a few restrictions.

The biggest being we had to dump the bug.

Right now I can't imagine a car being less desirable than that 2008 Bug. Yeah it was loaded and in nice shape.. but it's the tail end of the old design obviously nobody wanted. I mean when you can get a car with a msrp of 23k that's got 12k miles on it for $10k certified with a 65k mile warranty from a VW dealership.. yeah nobody wants it and THAT was before the new version hit the streets.

It would have been fine had it been hassle free but well, it was a VW.

So that's a limiting factor as can't really buy from a private party as then you've got to sell the bug separately.  To avoid 2 car payments would have to sell the bug first which as stated above would be difficult. Even if you do manage to shift it on to some idiot you'd then be down 1 car and would have to scamble to find a new one which can put you in a bad situation. We have backup cars but none are practical.

That also takes out ghetto dealers. The side of the road places that will finance you at 19.5%. You can always use your bank and get around that aspect but you can't get around the fact that they don't want your trade-in. Maybe if it was something they could sell, but nobody can sell a '08 bug.. so as we found even the nicer 'smaller' places would only give us auction value which was basically nothing.

So yeah bit of a restriction but honestly I've always liked dealing with at least the name band dealerships anyway as usually they'll stand behind the car better and you've got less chance of getting f'd over.

Acura TL sounds more like what you're looking for.  More HP than ES 330, smaller, but bigger than IS 300..... and all the features.

The TL looks great, and I was ready to be impressed with it, but I drove one a few years ago that was a loner from the dealership while my Dad's TL was being serviced... not impressed at all.  It had a very vague driving feel to it, very disconnected.  I'm not talking isolated like most luxury cars, just odd.  After driving the TL, I jumped back in the RL and the world was right again.  My '94 Accord wagon drove nicer than that TL.  Oh well.

Any pics of the new car Six?
