Hello!

My wife and I wanted to thank everyone who put on the SPF, including those who brought games, for such a great time! I would think that organizing such an event is quite a feat of logistics and stress, but we wanted to say that it was much appreciated!

Also, it was great to be able to try out so many games that we have never played. For myself, while there were so many great games I was very impressed with WoZ and I also was especially intrigued by Orbiter 1 and Spot-a-Card.

  Thanks again!

Glad you both enjoyed my Spot A Card - i think it was the oldest game at the show. (1960 wood rail)
Its a lot of work to bring games to a show but it's GREAT FUN to see so many get a chance to play your games.

 WELL DONE SPF !

I had my cousin bring his 9 year old daughter(who by the way loves pinball now!) and believe or not her favorite game was that spot a card!

+1 on the Spot a Card, I just couldn't walk away from it!  Probably played it at least 1/2 hour Saturday night.  It's great to see the historical games like that for sure.

Also big thanks to Leon, Donny, and everyone who brought games, especially Ron D. and Jeff/ Jmsvero who each brought around 10 games each, wow!  It was also great to see the lineup of all the newest Sterns provided by Curly, most impressive showing! and of course, thanks to Prok for bringing the biggest and best ever ... Hercules! :) I know the massive effort is always appreciated by all, even if it seems to go unnoticed at times.  It really does command attention and brings in the wow factor.  Plus, I always  love playing it.

Now that things have calmed down a bit, I wanted to thank Donnie and Leon for organizing the event which I enjoyed immensely.

I brought nine games up with me on Friday morning, and Leon brought my other game for a total of 10.  No one packs, prepares, loads, moves and sets up 10 games by themselves, so I wanted to thank my friend Ron H. (who some of you know) and Donnie, who each helped me breaking down games, and Ron for helping with the load up.  When I got there, I was helped by Leon and Jeff from Vero with unloading.  Setup helpers included Prok, Corpse and three friends from WPB, Jimbo, Ron S., and Fred Stab who pitched in as soon as they arrived.   If I missed anyone, please rest assured you have my gratitude.

I played in the tournament a fair amount, so I appreciate Jeff  from Vero and other collectors who helped keep an eye on my games and let me know when there were issues.  There were some inevitable breakdowns when machines get hundreds of plays in a day or so, so I wanted to thank John I., Fred Stab of Home Use Pinball, Curly, JoeZepp and Hamster (Bill) for their generosity in helping me fix my games or in fixing things that were simply beyond my limited technical skills.  As a tech, I do a good job of holding a flashlight for a real tech and fetching parts and drinks, so I truly appreciate the help.   Thanks to Batman and Corpse 2.0 for altering me to issues that could have gotten much more problematic had I not been informed of them quickly.

The tournament was very well organized and featured one of the strongest fields of the year, according to experienced tournament players.  congrats to all of the guys from our area who played and represented Florida with distinction, particularly Corpse and Corpse 2.0, Brian D., Sebastian, Spencer and Danny from Jacksonville.  I did want to comment that the heavy duty tournament players were not what I expected.  I expected very focused, super serious guys with some arrogance.  What I met was a ton of very nice people, willing to pitch in and help with the tournament, with fixing a game, or with providing play tips on an unfamiliar game.  The group of regular players acted very much like a family or group of close friends, but they seemed very willing to include anyone who wanted to interact with them as if they had know them for years.  Brian D. plays the circuit regularly and tells me he views it as a second family, and I can see why.  It was a truly enjoyable experience and even though I did not play as well as I would have liked, it perked my interest in playing in more tournaments.  No regrets at all.  I was especially impressed by how nice many of the bigger "names" were and how nice they were, particularly Bowen, Adam,  Sanjay, Steve, Josh S, Zach S., Kevin D and Mark from PAPA.  If you have an interest in playing in these tournaments, my recent experience suggests you should give it a try.  You will have a good time, win or lose.

I also wanted to thank Deadlander Al and his wife, Dean and Denise, Jeff from Vero, Leon and Donny for helping me pack up.  I got home with my games about 1:15 am, then got up at 6:00 am and unloaded them.   Howard Levine, a tournament player from New York who is often in my area visiting his mother, called me up and offered to bring over his friend Steve M. (who has played at Asylum events and APE) to help me set up my games.  Sure enough, they showed up last night and we put all of my games back together.  A truly classy gesture, and one which I very much appreciate as I head into a much needed few days off.

Sorry to have run on so long, but wanted to thank all for their help.  I also wanted to comment on the camaraderie, the esprit de corps and the sheer joy of playing pinball with friends.  As a special aside, I derived the most joy from watching two father and son combos, Corpse and Corpse 2.0, and Adam and Escher L.  Seeing them share together in the pure joy of the hobby and seeing their closeness gives me something to aim for with my son who is currently 4.   I commend both Jeff and Adam as players, and more importantly, as fathers.  You set the bar pretty high in both areas.

Looking forward to the next event (APE), then the next (GameWarp), then the next SPF, with FLiPs thrown in the middle, in the pinball circle of life.  I will be at all if I can, although I do not know if ten games are in the cards again.  I will be there, and  hope to see you all there as well.

Ron

Sorry so late in responding, but I am just back from vacation.

Another great show for the SPF.  The thank-you and great-to-see you list of people just keeps getting longer and longer and longer with each event.

Nonetheless, 2 names need to be mentioned at the top of the list.  Thanks to Leon and Donny for all of their efforts in bringing another great show to Florida.

I give major credit to Donny for organizing/running another great tourney, which brought in some world-class tournament players to the state of Florida.  If you are not into competitive pinball, this will give you an idea of the player strength at the SPF: out of the 69 players, 16 (about 25%) were officially ranked above 250 in the world, which is A-level status). Many players were in the top 100 and there were 4 players ranked in the top 10 in the world.

The 2012 SPF was a fantastic chance to play with the “big boys” (right here in Florida!) who are just a nice group all around. To namedrop a few top players-you were in the same room playing with the Sharpes (all 3 of them-Josh, Zach and Roger!) Lyman Sheats of Stern Pinball Programming and Bowen Kerins who provides the PAPA tutorials you may have seen.

Of statistical interest: there were 3 sets of families in the A-qualifying finals: Brothers Josh and Zach Sharpe, Father/Son team Adam and Escher Lefkoff and Father/Son team Jeff and Atticus Palmer.  That is cool. (BTW-Escher is 9, an A-level player, and can play some serious pinball!)

If you are interested in competitive pinball, Florida is a great place to get involved-and Donny is to be credited.

I also want to thank all of the collectors who brought games.  These shows run off collectors bringing games.  It is just that simple. Games ranged from wood rails all the way up to the latest releases.  In addition to the Florida collectors I see at the events, I saw several people in the FLiPS community who brought games.  Thank you.

Thanks to Curly of LSOG for bringing in the latest Stern games and for having new pins for use in the tourney.

Thanks to JJP for bringing WOZ.  The game seemed well-received with a crowd always around it.  I had a chance to plunge 1 ball.  I have no gameplay opinion.

Lastly, thanks to my wife for her support of the Corpse family playing pinball for 3 days straight.

If I forgot to give you a “thanks” here or did not say thanks in person, please note it was not intentional to omit you. Never enough time to say hello or play pinball.

See everyone next time around!

Jeff
