May 1st Update Project on Hold Indefinately

May 1st Update

"Land of Legend"

I've decided to put the project on hold indefinitely.  This is kind of a good and bad thing of sorts.  I will continue to finish building the playfield and ramps to make it playable but I have decided not to pursue the game any further at this time in favor of another project.  I haven't done anything with it recently but I been working with an artist that is making a translite for the game but I'm not sure how long it will take him or if anything will come of it.  I spent a lot of time recently working on a detailed rule set but there are still a bunch of holes that needed to be worked out.  The tentative title for the game I have is "Land of Legend."  At this time I don't have any plans on making a 3rd white wood or to do any more programming for the game.

Original Themes and Pinball

I see why there r no more original themes in pinball any more, it's tough.  Unless a person is doing a game that is extremely simple it could prove to be an impossible task especially when it is only one person making most of it.  U are literally pulling ideas out of thin air and trying to make them fit together.  One person can only be so creative.  It really takes several people to make something like that work and fill in the holes.  My "hole" is definitely art.  I've been learning to sketch online because I feel like it would be an awesome skill to learn, but art is something I would absolutely need help with.  Trying to find and work with someone who would be interested and mostly do art for free seems like it could turn out to be a disaster.  Although the idea of original themes in pinball sounds great, I think that most people don't care about original themes when playing or buying pinball myself included.  I guess that's why their aren't any "rethemed" original themes out there.

The Future Good Stuff

When I started the project I had a few ideas on different types of games but went with this one because I had the idea for a playfield layout in my head and went out to see how far I can get building it.  I've selected a new theme that I'll share soon on something that I will have source material I can pull from.  Same idea, trying to make one machine from home for fun.  It's a theme that has always loved and I'll have art, video, and audio that I'll be able to pull from.  I'm going to take what I learned from the project and use it here.  I completed most of the legwork already figuring out how things work, now most of the design will be done on the computer.

Thanks for sharing the saga as it developed. It was fun to watch.

It was also insightful to observe the entire design process and hopefully it enlightened some folks as to how much work goes into putting together a fully functioning pinball machine.

Your details of the process to get where you are (which is amazing BTW) are all the more reason to take a look at the games over the decades, especially the ones viewed as the all time greats or classics, and realize the level of commitment and talent needed from many passionate people to pull it off.

Keep us posted on new developments.

Bummer man. At least you learned a lot. Just by starting you got further than I would have.
