Pac-Man monitor (wg 4600) adjustment
« on: August 24, 2014, 07:09:45 PM »
Got an upright Pac-Man yesterday (yay parking lot auction deals!).  The ghosts, as well as the power pellets have a shadow on them.  It's like the top has a crescent ont them, then a darker shadow under the eyes.  Shows up worse on the pink and orange ghosts.

I think I've adjusted all the different settings (pots only, not the convergance...have no idea what to do there), and I'm pretty sure it's a WG monitor from internet research.  Seller told me he did a cap kit and game was in storage for a while.  Screen has some burn in, and as far as I can tell, is original to the game.  I put in a 96-1 kit on the original board, which replaces the graphics chips...still there, so I'm guessing it's the monitor?

What Voodoo should I do to make that final perfect adjustment?  And please, I fully understand that I am an amateur, especially with monitors.  Every time I stick my hand in there, I anticipate a zap.

Thanks!

Ummmm...no.  But next time you come by, you can bring me a shiny new 19" CRT monitor and show me how to install it!

Its not a graphics glitch board was tested on the bench before being put in the game. Monitor is a 4600 which was capped about 3 years ago.

Sounds Like Low Screen Voltage, and everything else is cranked up to compensate.

The colors look washed out, and if you look at Pinky, you can see the dark shadow for most of his body.  Also on Inky.  All of the ghosts have dark spots under the eyes, and so do the power pellets.

Bill, Could a dirty fuse holder or old fuse give me that lower voltage?

Luis, thanks for the input and confirmation on the monitor!  Didn't think it was the board, especially after installing the multi as a test.  Could it be the edge connector to the board?

And please, no one take this as I'm unhappy with my new purchase!  Could not be happier!  Game is totally playable, and the original joystick is soooooo nice!  Color just isn't "popping" and I'm not sure if it's an adjustment, or something out of my league.

Thanks everyone!

you need to turn up the screen just before you see crosshatch patterns ( the screen adj is on the neck board )

then adjust the black level on the RGB card..

If you can't get it to clean up, its pretty easy to fix if you can't get it to fixed by adjusting it.

you can test with another tube outside of the machine. a bit of a pain in the ass, but that would answer your questions. some monitors will never come back fully.

Okey dokey.  Adjusted all the knobs i could find.  Did the black level/screen knob adjusts.  Found a tint? knob, and a focus? knob on the back of the neck board.  All did things, but I still have a shadow on all the light colored objects on screen.

Anyone free next Sunday to come tinker?  Free wings or pizza! It feels like I'm missing a bloom knob or brightness knob.

I also can't seem to find a diagram showing all the adjustment points.  Looked in an online manual, but only found the neck board.  It was a manual for a k4600...

the main brightness is on the neck board not the flyback on a k4600

That's called the SCREEN voltage...

NOT brightness.
