Doing something a little different this year.
« on: March 31, 2015, 11:32:13 AM »
So, one of the things Dug and I have been talking about is how to really recreate that "arcade atmosphere" at the Jax Show this year. All of us remember going to the arcade as a kid - there was eighties music, it was dark, if it was a particularly cool arcade there was probably a lot of neon and maybe even a laser or two (it was the eighties after all and lasers meant hi-tech).

Then, there was the darker side of the arcades with the smoking, the drug dealers that were inevitably never too far away, and the teenagers that were generally swearing and maybe even fighting.

We are going to try to recreate this on Saturday night at Jax Expo 2015 - well, everything but the drugs, the swearing, and the fighting.  :-)

So ... on May 2nd at 8:30 PM, we will dim the lights, turn up the music and try to recreate that arcade feeling from 1981. This event is free for anyone that has already paid to attend Jax Expo for the day or for the weekend. Of course, it is also free to volunteers and exhibitors. This event will not impact anything happening in the tournament room. Lights and volume levels, etc. will remain constant in the tournament room throughout the event.

Hope to see all of you there. It should be a lot of fun!

Thank you for clarifying that :)

Well, as much as we want the original feel of an arcade the university probably won't go for that, but there is a deck outside right next to our space where you can smoke as much as you want.  Besides, there are enough cig burns on the control panel of my defender already.

Well I'll be the guy with a cooler of free beer, gatorade, and a few red bulls again like prior shows, but I suppose I could step it up a notch and wear a trench coat and hand out $10 or $20 worth of "game parts" to parties that feel so inclined ;) 8).  PM your requests now so I have your parts ready for delivery :P

Oh, I got it, but we actually had a number of people asking about smoking last year so I figured I would put it out there for any new smokers making it to the show this year.

I am totally fine with this, but we need to keep coolers out of sight of the bartender. She was a little perturbed last year as she was selling beer inside the event.

So, just keep the coolers in the parking lot and everything will be kosher.

I wanted to follow up on what Steve said about bringing beer, food, etc. to the event.  There is one business with a contract to do food for all of UNF, and our contact says any food or drink served has to be from them, which is why the bartender was getting a bit worked up when she saw people carrying around beer.

However, we are paying for a cash bar on Friday and Saturday night so everyone can get drinks from the bartender who will again be right down the hall from check-in.  So please help out on this front as the University Center is doing a great job taking care of us and I want to do them right as much as I can.
