Home backups, NAS?
« on: May 27, 2015, 04:22:04 PM »
What do you do for home backups? I think I've earned myself into a NAS that does pc/mac backups and media serving via DLNA.

I'm thinking about this thing:

western digital hard drives are the most common ones to fail in my experience working with PCs, macs, and laptops.

in your link of the 4TB backup, that item has already failed at least once. good sign to avoid it, in my humble opinion.

Usually people say Seagate is the worst. The problem is that now only WD, Seagate and maybe Toshiba make 3.5 inch hard drives - and Toshiba may just be re-branded from one of the other 2.

Many SSD makers but for large-capacity 3.5 inch hard drives you've basically got 2 choices.

I find it's more about individual models and runs of drives rather than the manufacturer - I've had plenty of both WD & Seagate fail, and plenty of both that have run for over 5 years with no problems.

I've had the opposite up until recently. Now lately large capacity (2tb and up) WD drives have been failing in droves. I work for a recognizable web hosting and web design firm. the amount of enterprise grade WD drives we have been going through over the past year is eye opening to say the least.

I have never in my IT life every seen a "Western Digital Enterprise" Class hard disk.. ( I think they currently are yellow label )

I have had Black, Green, Blue, Red, Purple all die on my more then any Seagate drive .

Enterprise class Seagate drives normally start to crook after 5 years of being on...

I fix things.. all the things.. but you have reach out first to see how my queue looks. ( all things arcade/pinball/computer ) ... do not do house calls, repairs are generally live streamed on twitch.

yep black and yellow label. I wasn't the one that inspected the drives and I'm really not terribly privy to whats been happening with this stuff. Last i remember, someone at WD wanted config information on the rigs they were on and a steady stream of them were being sent back.

look like these. they are both black and yellow. The newer WD color schemes normally have the same color top and bottom. Enterprise have black top half with a yellow bottom label. Might be relabled blacks for all i know.

As for a NAS. I still run a trusty intel atom rig with freenas. not the most top of the line rig but its never let me down.

I would just clasify that as a "Yellow" Drive.

all my HP servers have small 2.5" sas-sata or ssd drives.

its just a pic i lifted online. not one of the actual ones from work. I'll have to ask them what is up with those drives the next time i get into the office.
