Here's an interesting tear-down of the Big Trak.  They used the TMS1000 for the brains, 1k of on-board mask ROM and 64 *NYBBLES* (x4) of RAM.  That was some tight code!  Only one other driver and a handful of passives to round out the boardset.

I believe you are recalling the Mego Micronauts toys. I had the Battle Cruiser. Lots of fun with that thing.

I also had a thing for handheld electronic games. My faves were the Original Merlin, Amaze-a-tron.

The 6 Million Dollar Man vs. Bigfoot and Evel Knievel SSP sets were AWESOME!!! 

The Crash-Derby ones were also cool, but we never had one.  :(
