Garbage Pail Kids still going
« on: August 16, 2015, 06:22:42 PM »

I think I posted about this awhile back.. but everyone probably remembers Garabage Pail Kids. These things were currency in the play grounds of the mid-80s.

Topps actually resurrected the series about a decade ago. At first they were god-awful.. meant to appeal to current kids so all crud piss and poop jokes that weren't terribly clever or funny.

When that fluttered out they started reprinting the 80s cards which I guess did well so they've been making new cards again but in the 80s style with better humour and less reliance on the base-level stupidity. They are obviously pandering to the Gen-X buyers versus the dumb ass kids. It's good enough to get $2 out of me everytime I'm at target.

I collected them back in 5th, 6th grade. I don't think I had a concept of "mint condition" back then though.

Can't really say they still appeal to me the way some other things from childhood do though. I think I mainly liked them because I HATED cabbage patch dolls and the craze around those. I remember my sister had one and the only way she got it was my mom winning a contest for one. They were totally sold out otherwise. Amazing for such ugly pieces of crap.

We're probably within a couple years of the same age as that's roughly when I was into them too.  I still have my childhood box of cards and all of my first series cards are quite ratty.  I've had a few uncut sheets and multiple wax boxes go through my hands years ago back when I used to deal in toys, but even now I still have a large box of vintage GPK stuff to clear out.  I know I have at least 30 plus GPK pop-ups which were cheap toys with the main characters popping out of of a plastic trash can as well as tons of ephemera (party plates & cups, cheap sunglasses, gumball prizes, etc.).  I also have a piece or two of Topps Vault art from a decade ago when they first started selling the original art (I only have reverses sadly :().  In other words if anyone here is a GPK fanatic drop me a line ;)

I still have mine too! I could never get enough of the cruddy, grimy, poop-laden characters and funny names. It would make for a great pinball theme!  :)

I wouldn't mind having one of the original card paintings.

Most of the ones they have are from the later original series (post lawsuit) or from the new stuff that isn't as good.

Although there's been a few really good sets recently so some of that art might be available.

I wouldn't mind having one of the original card paintings.

I was actively collecting back when Topps started unloading the original art in the early 2000's via their "Topps Vault" auctions on ebay.  I remember their first or second piece of original art going for roughly a grand and all the ones after that started going for $500 to $1000 more.  I was the runner up on a couple of different pieces of card art (color final for the front of the card so it is *the* grail piece when it comes to art as there are of course pencil and color roughs out there as well), but I never won one of the expensive series II art pieces they were selling.  Too bad I didn't step up to the plate and pull the trigger back then as prices have quadrupled or more for original art so they're out of reach for me now as if I had 6k to spend on a collectible I'd buy the nicest Tron pin I could find ;).

I did wind up with an original piece of art though, but sadly it's for the reverse of a card.  It's from a series 5 or 6 card IIRC and has Johnny One-Note (the character below) on the back of the card in a comic strip.  I haven't found it yet digging through my collection room, but I'll bump my GPK thread when I find it.

Lastly, check out some of the original art offered by my favorite GPK artist, John Pound:
