I worked at Service Merchandise and remember we had one of those displays.  Corporate had us trash all of those in 1987 since it wasn't being sold anymore.  My understanding was it was just the shells in any case but we never took the contents out to check.  We just threw it in the dumpster.

The other thing I remember was "loss prevention" in those days.  We used to stock the cartridges on peg hooks but then a bunch of little thieves went nuts and forced us to put them behind glass.  We couldn't seem to keep most games in stock between theft and actual sales.  I definitely loved having first crack at buying new games when they came out (SMB 2, etc.).

We saw this at Free Play and my wife FLIPPED OUT. She started gushing with memories of seeing the display in stores as a kid and it ignited a conversation with our friends who were with us about all the video game / micro computer displays we remembered throughout the years - I especially remember the Atari 2600 display with the buttons to select between a bunch of games.

Thanks for bringing this thing back to life and passing it on to someone who'll keep it safe!

It looks like it was a PCB with different roms for each game.  And made by Atari's Arcade division.  Fun thread to read through.
Vids: Donkey Kong (w/DK, DK2, DK Remix, DKjr, DKjr Remix, DK3), Midway cocktail (w/ArcadeSD), Defender cocktail, Rampage World Tour, Space Invaders Deluxe (w/Braze), Moon Patrol, Tron (w/Satan's Hollow), Asteroids Deluxe (w/Braze), Pac-Man (with HSS multi), Pac-Land, Phoenix, MAME

Ha! At the bottom of the page you'll see I expressed interest in that display for free play next year :). I'd really like to find a new display or kiosk for the next show if possible. If you have a vintage kiosk for a reasonable price please pm me.  Thanks....

Ah man, that's the one. What a find. Bunch of memories camping on that thing in K-Mart as a kid. And playing "Lemonade" on the Commodore 64 they had running near by. Thanks for the link!

whats cool is you could probably pop out the rom and put some of the new home brews on it like Zippy & explosive diarrhea.

I fix things.. all the things.. but you have reach out first to see how my queue looks. ( all things arcade/pinball/computer ) ... do not do house calls, repairs are generally live streamed on twitch.
