Any Input please
« on: June 24, 2009, 09:21:16 AM »
Okay with our ever growing family, we are looking at another vehicle, anyway whilst the minivan route worked for us before, Wife is missing the SUV, so as a trade off, does anyone have or have any input into minivans/SUV that can seat 8 ADULTS easily, we looked at a Nissan Armada, and was pretty nice, but know nothing about them, we did have a Surburban and was good, thanks

Not really a SUV but the Honda Odyssey is a nice minivan with seating for 8 (except in the low end model).

Well,

I think MOST SUV's just aren't made for 8 adults, but if you MUST have an SUV I think the Ford Explorer has a version with a 3rd row seat that will get you 8 seats.  Plus, the seats will fold down and you can use it as a game hauler for sure! :)   For sure the minivan gives you a lot more room, as the SUV's kinda cram the floor closer up, so not as much leg room or ceiling room I believe, but if you don't want a van then, check into the Explorer.  Have seen them fairly cheap on Ebay under $4k, but mileage affects the pricing as usual.

I Agree with Jocko on the Oddessy...Yeah it's a minivan, but a friend of mine has one and it is pretty sweet. Remote opening doors, easy pop out benches for game moving, etc. ;D

well we had a big old surburban, got the minivan with remote opening doors and that was ideal for school runs, but now it has some AC problems it has to go, and wife wants a surburban size again, says she feels safer! just trying to get some input, as websites dont tell ya a lot, and dont want the the hassle of going to a car lot and getting pushed by some salesperson, so any input from any vehicles anyone has already is good, its gotta seat 8 adults nicely  ;D

maybe you can pick up a used limo? there are smaller ones that do 6 in the back, 2 people up front. Everyone is comfortable, everyone has a seat belt plus you can use it on Friday and Saturday nights being a limo driver to make extra money!

It isn't all about size.  For example, the Odyssey and Suburban both have a 5 star crash/safety rating in all categories except rollover resistance (Odyssey 4 star, Suburban 3 star).  This is what I expected, as I've seen more than one large SUV upside down and very few minivans.  An SUV with better rollover resistance is something lower profile like the GMC Acadia.

A big problem with SUVs still is not enough air pressure in the tires.  The tires on SUVs tend to be truck based tires which have a high sidewall.  That high sidewall allows for a lot of roll when they're under inflated.  Too many SUV owners drive their SUVs like cars (and not trucks) because that's what they're familiar driving.  SUVs have a higher center of gravity.

Basically my point is that I don't think SUVs are any more dangerous than any other type of vehicle. They have advantages and disadvantages and as long as you know about them, you can do the things to minimize the disadvantages before they create "roll over" situations.
