Car Insurance Companies
« on: September 06, 2015, 09:19:33 AM »
I have been with State Farm for almost 35 years and they just upped my insurance another $20 a month.  I am going to call them next week to find out what gives as I have not had any claims.  Any suggestions for a company I can get a better rate with minimal hassles when filing a claim?

No idea on the hassles of filing a claim, but to get the best rates I've got to periodically switch back and forth between Geico and Progressive. Generally I'll sign up with one of them for 6 months (wish they did 1-year policies, but they don't), then 6 months later they'll raise the rates by a small amount, and 6 to 12 months after that they'll lose their damn minds and jack up the rates sky high for no good reason - no accidents, no claims, no change in coverage, same car, same address, etc.

So I have to switch back to the other one to get the rates down and the cycle repeats just like that again. Been like that for years. It's annoying bullshit. They seem to be under the impression that it's a big hassle to switch companies so customers will stay regardless of the price increases - but it's not, so I don't.

As for service Amica is supposed to be the best. Their rates are always higher than either Progressive or Geico though so I haven't gone with them. They also don't allow things like not having uninsured motorist coverage - which is probably wise, but it does increase the prices. I think they do offer 1-year policies though.
I've stayed away because I'm driving a 16 year old car and I want the insurance to be as cheap as possible - when I finally buy a new one I'll take another look at Amica.

It has been several years, but I did literally save a couple hundred dollars switching to Geico.  I've been with Geico for quite some time.  I have had bad experiences dealing with Progressive when dealing with claims.  One was when the other driver had Progressive and they tried messed things up.  I called Geico after the accident and they were very helpful in giving me the info I needed to make sure my car was fixed without any money out of pocket and without having to file a claim against them (since I was not at fault).

Another time was a friend's truck that I was carpooling with while it was being fixed.  Lots of issues.  But that could be the same for any insurance company.  They don't make money by paying claims.

That said, I've been happy with Geico.

I spent nearly 10 years with Progressive years ago and had to fight tooth and nail when I finally had a claim.  The adjuster was an idiot and needed the mechanic to identify parts for her while it was on the lift (clearly she was new).  I dropped them and have been pleased with esurance since, but then again I haven't had to file a claim with them either...

While I was under my family's plan a while back (20ish years ago now I guess) I remember State Farm taking care of claims quickly and easily without having to fight for every last penny.  If I could get the same exact coverage that I have now with State Farm for just a few bucks more I'd go with them.  However when I got a quote from them five years back the difference between them and esurance was astronomical.
