LOL:

Oh dear. It’s, uh, it’s not as bad as it looks. No, really! See, this dungeon is called The Manji — a manji is a left-facing swastika, which represents wealth and good fortune in Japan. The one the Nazis used was a right-facing swastika. Still, I don’t know if Japan of all places gets to play the, “Ohhh, we didn’t know swastikas were bad” card.

"Miyamoto’s logic was that making Zelda perplexing would force kids to share information with their friends and foster a sense of community around the game, and it worked! Anyone who spent any time on playgrounds during the 80s knows The Legend of Zelda was consistently one of the most discussed games."

I loved reading this, and I never knew the intention behind it. I remember discussing Zelda with my best friend and group at our bus stop multiple times back in the late 80s. Very cool to know that it was Miyamoto's intention for us to be doing that very thing.

That level was always kinda eye-raising.. but you do see that symbol commonly used in Japan so I guess we can give them a pass here.

But definitely the best part of Zelda was figuring out the secrets then sharing them around. Before the internetz (and before I even started calling BBSes) your school was your source of game help. I remember the kid who had the Nintendo Fun Club News with the Zelda map was an instant celebrity.

I do kinda miss that.. now if anyone gets stuck help is a gamefaqs link away at any given moment.

Swastikas have been around a lot longer than Hitler.  It is used in indian culture too and you can find them in their art still today.  So I wouldn't say the actual swastika is "bad" but it unfortunately brings a widely accepted negative connotation because of it's improper use by a certain despot.

Hooks pointed to the right = Nazi symbol
hooks pointed to the left = good luck symbol

Very easy to get confused.

Basically this:

Socially, it doesn't matter anymore what the symbol used to mean, or whether it points left or right - the Nazis tainted it regardless.
