Pinside Charging Sale Fees
« on: November 05, 2015, 05:15:00 PM »
In case you missed it pinside has started charging a fee for selling things on the site.

https://pinside.com/pinball/forum/topic/pinside-update-november-2015

Not sure how they turned that site into their full time jobs...... :o

Must be using the Greek System for a job  ;D

"Well it's not that bad, but since all this work on Pinside has now replaced our daytime jobs, we're gonna have to consider generating some income. The donations go a long way to offset our monthly costs (server and hosting costs, office rent etc) but now we need to think about feeding ourselves (and our families) too.

We though long and hard what would be a good place to "monetize" Pinside and we think the Marketplace makes the most sense. After all, that's where money is already, uhm, the main currency.

We started by adding some cool paid promotional options for marketplace ads (all optional choices). But, more importantly, we are now charging a mandatory value fee if you successfully sell your game through Pinside. What? Well, it's fairly simple. If you put a game in the Pinside market place you will be informed of its price tier (which is based on past sales prices). Each price tier has an associated sales fee. Again, you only pay this if you sell your game."

I've seen some forums where if you aren't a certain member class (read: paid member class) the For Sale subs are 'delayed' ie the paid people see the ads instantly but the plebs have to wait a day or so before they can see the messages. Pretty crafty.

well, pinside and eBaY fools customers seem to pay the highest price for pinball.

ebay clears 20% on a sale.

I hate both sites.

Pinside is terrible.  Found this while reading their update post.

"Don't make speculative claims without fact"

I don't think the moderators understand the meaning of speculate...

Basically they reserve the right to modify your post whenever they feel like it.

And now they are going to charge you for selling something, lets see how well that works out and who is going to be in charge of their books.  Are all the pinball transaction details going to be recorded on their ledger.  Better start paying taxes on your pinball transactions.

People often flip out on us for moderation but trust me.. we are probably the least moderated place out there.

We even had a big toss up on AtariAge (of all places) recently which is why there's a bunch of people from AtariAge in our chat room in the evenings.. they all cancelled their accounts.

I'm glad we're kinda Lando Calrission's Cloud City small. We're still pulling in decent activity.. things certainly aren't dead, but its not some 10k post a day behemoth that requires crazy expensive hosting or is impossible to keep up with.

Plus since everyone is fairly local you can't be too much of a dick otherwise the next event will be awkward, lol.

Jack just needs to introduce a "Key to the Village" membership class. For $20 a month you see FS posts 30 minutes before normal members. Also, any thread from Politics is guaranteed never to show up in your show unread post list.

Lol!

I have thought about enabling ads, but having it so once you hit user level 1 (ie 5 posts) or something they go away. That way we can make money off the bots and lurkers. I'm OK with that :)

+100

I like coming here.  It's my go-to.  Been here for years and one of the original members.

Somehow not 'major' drama after all these years.

I'm sure there are issues and I have heard them here and there but #6 and mods keep it cool.

Thank you #6 and moderators (and the other board members who try to keep it real - it's about the good times and meeting up with others, meeting and spending time with good people, and enjoying what we share as a whole in the hobby).

Happy gaming,
Big Al

Bad idea from the get go. :-\    I'm willing to support the hobby in anyway I can and maybe a donation to help with server hosting and capacity growth.  But as for the site being a full time job,   that's their choice.  I manage the BASH, and others moderate the site without asking anything for it.

Long live SMF ;D

Being a moderator is a volunteer job and receives no pay like a condo board member of a community..    Not sure how pinside has Offices to pay for ? Most sites are started from Home based Computer or mobile labtop.
Anyone paying to join a website has dedication to it for sure. As it stands now I belong to no such pay website and most likely never will..
I said goodbye to Xbox due to subscription /
if Pinside charges to be a member . Goodbye Pinside

Anyone starting a website to charge people is just going down the Profit/Greed lane and that has infiltrated every aspect of every hobby and every thing .// Greed !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
yeah I got it for a dollar but you know it is worth 1000 so . give me every penny of that thousand friend :-*!!!!
