Most you've paid for a console game
« on: February 02, 2016, 04:34:33 PM »
Thought this might be an interesting poll with the way prices are going. There are plenty of games out there that will run you hundreds if not thousands.

Right now (for a console game) it stands at $350 (the Musha I just bought). Previous to that it was around $200.

From there it drops rapidly, other than those two I don't think i've ever paid over $100 for a 'used' game and can only count a few newer special editions that cost me over $100 (like the recent Fallout 4.. if that was even over $100 I don't recall).

I've definitely got games worth some bank but I bought them either new for back-in-the-day retail prices or found them used for a small fraction of their current going  rate.

I don't think I've ever paid more than $60 - and rarely that.

I'm happy to pay $60 for a game like Fallout 4 - definitely get my money's worth there and I want to support them in making more games like that.

Probably the most I've paid for a single game is World of Warcraft, but that's including all the expansions and monthly fees over the course of 10 years, got to be around $300 total, but again I got a ton of game time that money - and as soon as I ran out of content I cancelled the subscription and didn't start it up again until there was a new expansion out. Even then I usually wait for the prices to come down on the expansions.

Generally the stuff I collect is pretty cheap. I want a complete copy of Pa-Rappa the Rapper for PS1 but can't bring myself to pay $50+ for a used game.

The few special editions I've bought were well after launch and only because they were on sale. The mid-tier Halo that came in a tin (Halo 3, I think?) because it was actually cheaper than the standard edition at the time - I think you may have recommended that deal actually. Everyone wanted either the high-end one with all the crap, or just the game so no one bought that mid-level one.

I've also got the night-vision goggles that came with that one version of Call of Duty - but again, well after the fact, I think I paid somewhere from $25 to $40 for that set.

Many of the used games I buy on Amazon or Half.com cost less, often MUCH less, than the shipping fee.

Then again I'm not a "serious" collector - I don't buy stuff like Power Rangers for Sega CD just so I can never play it  ;D

ha!

No really there's no need to pay crazy money for anything these days. There's a few games I'm willing to pay for just to fill holes but otherwise i'm happy to wait for deal

Plus if i'm going to pay high dollar (ie hundreds) for a game its going to be either a vid or a pin. With those I know i'll either get my money back or make a profit when I'm ready to sell it.

There's going to be a lot of weirdness with inheritance as time goes on. People with video game collections worth $100,000, $200,000, $300,000+ - but mostly in the form of games worth $5 to $20 each, with some $100 games and a few $300-$500 ones.

So the good news is you've inherited an estate that has a pretty decent total value, the bad news is that it's going to be a huge pain in the ass to turn it into cash...

The prices on some of these things has been skyrocketing, you'd be surprised how much just random individual games are worth. Also large collections will do bank on their own so even if you had a room full of $10 games you could section it off and sell them in bulk and make most of that at once.

The real question is.. will this stuff hold it's value say 50 years from now? I think there's a good chance. Right now a lot of the 'classic game' market is driven by people who weren't even alive (or were very young) during the era these games were popular.

Was it that much? I remember it being up there.

I fix things.. all the things.. but you have reach out first to see how my queue looks. ( all things arcade/pinball/computer ) ... do not do house calls, repairs are generally live streamed on twitch.

I guess cartridge games will hold up fine - the ones without batteries anyway, they don't have capacitors or anything that will leak or break down over time right?

PS1 game discs, the old black ones, many of those are already getting worryingly brittle though.

Pc Engine Magical Chase $220. Worth it though for such a great game for the system and $3000 cheaper than the US version for Turbografx. Normally I don't spend much on games and I prefer to buy lots and trade up but I had just cashed out on sime junk games I wasn't playing so it wasn't really a hit to my wallet

Is there like a price guide online to rarer games?  Idobt know much about retro gaming but have no idea what games would be north of $100 other that neo geo AES games?  Anything for genesis/super Nintendo?  I was a huge 3d0 junky and it seems like any game on a CD is dirt cheap, am I wrong?

You're best bet is searching ebay sold at this point, that's the universal price guide.

It's always a good idea to check every now and then as some prices will surprise you.

I think I'm only at about 70-ish even counting my most expensive MVS cart.  I never had a NeoGeo AES, or it would have been $200.  Unless you count the Arcade Duo Pro card which isn't really a game, but more a system card to run all the goods on my TG16 CD.

I'm too frugal right now to pay a ton for some games.  And I have most of the games that I really want.
