Auto insurance recommendations?
« on: November 06, 2016, 12:18:55 AM »
I'm shopping for automobile insurance, who do you recommend? Or... Who's cheapest? What are you paying per year, one or two vehicles... probably just going with liability.  Any help is appreciated.

How much is state farm? My experience with them in the past is that they were very picky assholes and high price, but this is why I'm inquiring.

I switched from State Farm to Geico because SF raised my rate by $100 a year without any reason. SF used to be cheaper but not anymore. They are excellent with settling claims quickly.

Jeff I'm a USAA insurer and like their service but the most recent ultra competitve quotes I've found come from GEICO.

They'll smoke State Farm, Allstate and Progressive.

State Farm has had me bent over forever.  I hear it is pretty cost effective to bounce between GEICO and Progressive every 6 months.  My homeowner's insurance went from ~$2,400/yr to ~$1K when I left State Farm.

state farm has always been good to my family and myself. the only thing that sucked is they dropped house insurance a while back and left us out to dry. Car wise they are pretty good though

Geico here to. Never had any issues and they are cheap. Had progressive for awhile. Had one small accident and the raised my premium the exact number it cost to fix the car.

Had them all dropped them after a year always shopping they will not call you and say I can get it cheaper for you.
I ended up with E-Insurance saved me $500 bucks a year no accident's 30 years knock on wood.
But everyone is different.
Just my 2 cents.

Geico is generally the cheapest I've found, though occasionally Progressive is cheaper in a given cycle.

I usually get a bunch of online quotes every 6 months to compare them, but it always seems to be Geico and Progressive that are the least expensive by far. There are a bunch that are pure comedy - Traveler's insurance always sends me junk mail saying things like "With us pay 1/3 what you're paying now!" but whenever I request a quote from them it's always 2x to 4x what I'm currently paying for exactly the same coverage.

The thing that pisses me off is that I'll a decent rate for a cycle or two, then they'll raise it by a lot for no reason - no accidents, no tickets, etc. So then I have to switch. Apparently they're under the impression that it's hard to change companies so most people won't bother - but at least since everything moved to the web it's very simple to switch. Still annoying though. Apartments pull the same kind of bullshit, but there they know that it is a big pain the ass to move to a new place so they've got you over a barrel.

I wish they'd offer 1-year plans too, but none of the cheap ones do.

For the best service I've heard good things about Amica, but never used them myself. They're definitely more expensive, but they don't even offer the bare-bones cheap coverage plans. You can't reject uninsured motorist coverage, etc. - things like that.

Thanks everyone, I really appreciate the help, it did help me a lot.  And the winner is... Geico. For one car it ended up being $250 for 6 months, $50k/$100k coverage. For 2 cars it was only about $110 more... Which either way is about HALF of what I was expecting to pay. It could have been even cheaper for bare bones coverage, I think around $200/ 6 months for $10k/$20k coverage, but I opted to go with a little more coverage for not to much more money. It was very easy and quick, I got  an online quote and then when I called for further details the rep had all my info, walked me thru everything and answered all my questions...so that also impressed me. And even better, they answer the phone 24/7...so Bat hours came in handy discussing coverage at 3am.

They emailed me proof of insurance and ID cards immediately,  Had them before i was off the phone with them.  I think the next closest was Progressive, but they were $200 more for 6 months, so Geico won.

Cheapest is not always the best option, particularly when it comes to insurance.
I was an insurance agent for 12 years with an independent agency and then State Farm.
State Farm and USAA hands down offer the best service and fairest settlement amounts when/ if you have a claim, even if they cost a bit more.
Allstate, Geico, Progressive......not so much. I dealt with all these companies over the years and their claims service was slower, they offered less, and the process was more difficult and complicated.
I've been with USAA for 25 years and I have zero complaints. It's worth it to me to pay a little more and know that I'm going to be well taken care of should I need to file a claim.
All that being said, I f&$@ing hate insurance. Car, house, health, it's all a racket.

Then there are the rackets of pet insurance, tire insurance, and the funniest of all: Life Insurance.  ;D
