The Honda Manufacturing of Indiana plant’s Civics will be sold in Mexico and 22 Latin American and Caribbean countries, according to a news release.

So are these Japanese cars going to say "Made in the USA" while being sold in Mexico... its just funny :)

Actually my 1994 Honda Accord Wagon was made in America... in fact, all Honda Accord Wagons were, yep - even those exported to Japan!  In Japan, they came with a badging that labeled them "U.S. Wagon" and they had a Honda of America badge on them.

Honda in America, Chevy in Mexico. The Jap cars are made in America, and the "Big 3 American Automakers" are made overseas. hypocrites...lol.

Honda currently builds just under 80 percent of its U.S.-sold vehicles at factories in the U.S.

I'd honestly like to see how that compares to other automakers.

I'm always pleasantly surprised when I buy a good and its made in the USA. K-Mart seems to have more of their stuff made here (some rug and some other stuff I've noticed).

Blame the unions for that. It's too expensive for the Big 3 to build most of their cars here, thanks in large part to the Union.

It's cheaper for Japanese manufacturers to build US-Market "mainstream" cars here than it is to deal with all of the shipping from Japan. Only their premium/performance models are still built in Japan (and enjoy a higher level of build quality because of it...).

to be clear, this isn't just because Honda has a giant <3 for the US, American workers, etc. One of their motivations is that as the Yen gets stronger against the US dollar... uhm.. something or other makes it better for them to build cars here.

i'll figure out the macro-economic speak later.

It all actually started with Toyota and their JIT concept, at a time when the dollar was very strong and the yen was weak, so that's only a temporary truth IMO.

JIT manufacturer/assembly/distribution is far more streamlined than the older "everything is built here, from stockpiles of parts, to be delivered way over there..." method. Unfortunately, the US made parts and the US based workers still build a lower quality vehicle than a "100%" (obviously not all of the parts are made in Japan :) ) Japanese parts (major) / built vehicle.
