What was the name of this old computer game?
« on: September 19, 2018, 02:28:28 AM »
Back in the day, I want to say 89 maybe. there was this computer game that was on like a Tandy or commodore. It had no graphics just words. it would start out like this "you are in the living room of a house do you want to go forward, backward, left or right" . And you would answer, then it would ask another question. I remember making outside and getting ran over by a steamroller or something. does anyone recall the name of this computer game? what year? Make? Name? and can you still get this for a new computer. Nintendo nes kinda made a game like it but with visuals.

They were called "text adventure" games. The most popular one was Zork, but that sounds more like Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy.

Is there anything like it out there now. or a copy that can be played on a new computer?

You can find emulated versions easily and even play on dedicated websites running the games I believe.

Ha havent thought of these games in years...we called them “Go East Go West” games, the one we played the most was called MindShadow, there was also one based on the TV show Dallas and one based on the Hobbit. The Mindshadow one was a lot of fun.

MUDs are still alive and well. I still login to one of them to say hey to a few people I know every once in a while.

Which game is it? Hitchhiker's Guide, Zork or something else? There were a ton of different text-adventure games, and also later ones which were basically the same thing but with a still picture for each place you could go to - so slightly less guesswork on those.

Did you open your eyes (in the game) ?

Yes, they're really that picky sometimes - in some cases for comedic effect, in others because the programmer may have been a bit um... "special".
