Just wondering with new pins so pricey, do they really earn their keep on location? When I go to pin bars they never seem terribly busy. How long does a new machine take to pay for itself? Not looking at all into getting into the business, just hoping we will continue to see new pins on location and that they earn enough for the operators.
Games Owned: Fish Tales,, Countdown, Joker Poker (YES!), DWHO, EATPM, GRAND LIZARD, 60 Multicade
Past Games Owned: Gilligan's Island,Stock Car EM, Cherry Bell, Black Pyramid, Jokerz!, Hang Glider, Capt. Fantastic, Nip-It, Pro Pool, Dimension, Bally Supreme (wood rail) Genco Spitfire (wood rail). Arcade: Defender, Robbie Roto. (Got carried away at an auction on Roto, sheesh!) WTB: Alien Poker, Paragon, Surfin' Safari, Eight Ball Delux.

Depends on the week lol
It’s a great spot for storage for me and a location in SWFL where you can play public pinball 6 days a week. I wouldn’t leave my day job for it. You have to live/operate in a great market for it to work (Miami, Orlando, Jax, Tampa, Gainesville, etc)

I usually go on league night, which is a Tuesday, and usually the bar gets really good business. I think the last 4 or 5 times I went, I saw people who didn't play in the league playing a few games. I think the newer games and games with popular themes attract people who don't play pinball. Don't really know much about the business side of things, but Nice Guys is definitely one of the better performing pin locations that also serves food. Great games, great food, very trendy spot that attracts all kinds of people.

To me, it seems that location is really important, I think Nice Guys provides the right kind of vibe for pinball, where as other places that I've been to didn't create the right atmosphere for pinball.

Still concerned about how busy these pin places seem to be. Great for me as a player, not so great for operators. Does anyone know how pin sales break down? What percentage is sold for home use vs. Commercial?

i've seen DKs post-routed pinballs. it's hard pressed to tell any difference from one that sat in a home gameroom vs one on a route for 2 years.

he has some cool tricks to keep the games in as-new condition. and in today's market, you can route, make money off a new title, and sell it off for a minimal loss 2 years later if you wanted to do that.

but like he said, i don't think anyone will nail a living off a route in today's world.

and other than node boards, i'll give stern props. these games are very reliable in operation, from what i've seen...i routed one years ago, in a slower location. i also looked at it as free storage.

Margins are good enough for me to keep pins on route ;)
No idea on pin sales. I will presume it is VERY different now than the 70s, 80s, 90s

Weekly cleanings/wax, changing pinballs out at 500ish plays, cliffys, etc. I also don’t keep pins out for years (there are exceptions, but mostly swap out pin every 3-9 months).

There's a remarkable absence of industry studies and figures. It seems that no economic guru has seen what's going on with arcade and pinball since Pixar and Spielberg made it fashionable again.
It seems that the best bang for buck for routes are the pushers, which is kind of sad.

My point was missed a bit. I wasn't concerned about routed pin resales. Great though that machines are well maintained. I just wondered how many new machines are sold to operators vs. new home sales.

in the 70s, 80s, 90s...it was all routes. no one purchased for home use. 1 out of 10000 doesn't count.

70s and 80s arcades and pinballs...pay $1800ish. game is 4 years in service, take game out, throw in dumpster.

the 90s arcade...2 years in service. take jamma board out, put in new $400.00 kit of a jamma board/graphics. throw out old PCB.

the 90s pinball....4 years in service. take pinball out, sell to a smaller operator via a trade magazine. :P

and now, the collector. we were the minority, the stupid collectors. i started in 1998. most are after me. now, we're the majority. blind purchase of a $7000 pinball machine. sell for $6000. wash. rinse. repeat.

When I buy my games I don’t get asked if they are for route for home use. I presume most people don’t get asked that either so I don’t know where you would find that info. I would be interested as well
