Our first tournament night is this Wednesday. Come try something new: Flip Frenzy format! No strikes, just fast-paced head-to-head play. Play fast, win fast, avoid losses and improve your standing. Top 4 after qualifying ends will go to a one-round match play final. Everyone gets home in time for work Thursday.

Come on and give it a try! All ages welcome. 5 BUCKS A HEAD. Hey, it's cheaper than a ticket to Toy Story.

Practice: 5-6:45 pm
Intro and Rules: 6:45-7 pm
Flip Frenzy: 7-9:30 pm
Finals for the Top 4 only: 9:30-end

Hi again. I forgot to mention that we are starting the tournament at 7pm. If you walk in after the tournament starts we cannot add you to it. (Sorry for anyone getting stuck late at work.) I'm sure you will be welcome to stick around and socialize.

For those wondering WTH this type of format is, here is some discussion on tilt forums.  It’s definitely different.  It reminds me of some of the unique formats we used in FLiPS events.

Enjoy :)

PS again: There will be payouts for 1st through 4th place, as is custom.

1st Place: 50% of the proceeds
2nd Place: 25%
3rd Place: 15%
4th Place: 10%

All other players will receive nothing except a great cheap night of pinball and will occupy the positions Match Play determines.

Thanks to NormaJ for running the event. (That’s a lot of work-a true frenzy for everybody including the TD :)  )

Thanks to kawikid and Pinball Dudes for providing the games and venue!

About 20 head to head games played in 2-1/2 hours followed by 3-game Papa Style format for top 4 qualifiers.

Final 4

I want to thank everyone for coming out! Due to popular demand, I am currently investigating changing the upcoming Tournament #2 (in 2 weeks) from a 3 Strikes format to Flip Frenzy. I will keep everyone apprised of that.

We heard many comments from the tournament players. Everyone agreed it was a great new format! However, we know that there is a little room for improvement.

If you would like to supply any feedback, please feel free to send me a PM or reach out to Kawikid. We are committed to making this event the best it can be.

Again, we hope everyone had a great time.

PS: For those looking for how they finished, the Match Play links are here:

Hi again. Just a "P.S." regarding this past Wednesday's tournament and how we will improve it for July 10's match...

There are multiple ways to run a Flip Frenzy tournament. The technique I learned was you stay on a game until, as I put it, "you win once or lose twice". Managing that format requires a lot of manual effort, and I thought Match Play simply automated this technique.

But Match Play relies upon what it calls "Virtual Queuing", a different technique which appears to be fairer. With Virtual Queuing, it does not matter whether you win or lose a game, you are going to play twice before being sent back to the queue.
  • In your first game, you play as Player 1.
  • In your second game, you play a new opponent on a new machine as Player 2.
  • After your second game you go to the back of the queue.
This technique ensures everyone balances out at around the same number of games played. (Everyone played around 20 games in 2.5 hours!)

I think we had the right size queue (2-3 players), although I stress that players should commit to the full time period so we do not have drastically short queues.

Some players lamented that they played the same game over and over. Although we had a good player queue, we failed to institute a machine queue! So when Match Play picked you as a player for your second game it may have placed you on the only machine open - the one you just played! We can solve this easily by adding a few machines to the bank. Match Play will choose one of these unused machines for the next match, thereby guaranteeing you will not play the same game twice in a row.

So, at the next tournament you can proceed with confidence! At the end of each game:
  • Player 1 will report to the scorer to announce the outcome and prepare for his/her next opponent and machine. (You will be playing the first person in the queue.)
  • Player 2 will report to the last seat in the queue.
I apologize for not being in sync on Match Play's variation on this format, which caused a little too much confusion at the beginning of the night. I also apologize for not adding a few extra machines to the bank beforehand, which would have increased variety. Next time we will include as many machines as we can, regardless of the size of the field.

Thank you for your understanding as we blaze new trails in Florida tournament play!

it's all just a learning curve. i wouldn't want to direct a tourney. barely even like playing in them. :)

just to add, i think it's possible to still play a game back to back. it's just less likely with a larger game pool for matchplay to pick from.

40+ good games to choose from. :) i'll have to make a run up one wednesday night.

As I mentioned to you NormaJ, I figured it would take some time to learn the system and the software settings for this format.   We all went through this years back with the first wave of strikes tourneys.

This format is new to all us; thanks for spending so much time learning about it.
