First time towing pins help
« on: June 27, 2019, 01:09:44 PM »
I’m going up to SFGE and bringing two pins back (hooray!) but need advice on trailering please.

Have a Sequioa with hitch. Advice on what size I should get and from where (uhaul?). I want an enclosed one of course.  Tips for packing and securing?  Thank you!

couple simple blankets (don't rent uhauls, bring your own) and shrink wrap from home depot. 20 bucks.

4 straps. 1 for each game, 1 to hold each game against the tie-downs on the side of the uhaul. maybe bring a pillow or 2 for protection against movement. the tie downs suck sometimes.

Dimensions
Inside dimensions: 8' x 4'8" x 5'4" (LxWxH)
Door opening: 4'0" x 4'10" (WxH)

enclosed trailer. 5x8 is a small uhaul, will fit 2 games, broken down, with a ton of extra space.  i think you can move 4 inside one. i've moved 3 arcades with a handcart inside one. used a 2 inch ball hookup.

your gas mileage will go down. figure that into  your expenses.

Just a quick note that I can fit two pinball machines in the back of my Suburban pretty easily.  I do not know your situation with respect to passengers, but you might look into whether that is workable for you.  Sequoia's size s similar, but it would also depend on the specific games.  If that will not work, or is not to your taste, trailer rentals are usually fairly cheap.  Chris' advice is spot on with respect to the equipment you need, but if you are not used to driving a trailer, it can be a little nerve-wracking.  Good luck with your games and your trip.

ron's right, i was thinking titan style of pickup truck. drop the rear seats, squeeze both of them inside. flip them, bet you can still close the tailgate.  ;D

never trust what they say you can, or cannot haul, online. you have to take measurements of widest points, and pinballs you're grabbing, and we can advise much better.

even if not able to shut the tailgate, wrap 1 up like a mummy, and ride out with the back opened up somewhat, secured with straps. that's just the way i'd go for ease:

im not a viable source. i'd shove a hercules in a miata if someone said i couldn't do it. :P

Appreciate it guys. I have 6 passengers including myself with luggage so I’ll have to tow. Taking a vacation up there (I grew up in Atl).  First time going to SFGE.

IThanks for the advice on size and how to pack.  While it is very different, I have past experience towing jet skis but I’m mainly nervous about the long trip home with the pins.

Couple follow up questions please.  I’m getting a Space Shuttle and a Space Mission EM.

I saw on pinside a guy used a 5x8 and put his pins on their backs but they had folddown heads.

The two I’m getting don’t so do I take the heads off, put the pins with legs off on the floor? Or do I strap the heads on and put them in upright in their backs?

Is the plastic wrap to make sure they stay dry and/or to help hold them together?  Is it critical or will lots of moving blankets suffice?

Thanks again

Remember to remove all the balls from the games first.  If you are going to lay the heads down, you may need to pull the connectors loose in the heads if the wiring is too tight to lay the heads down onto the cabinet while its at playing position. Blanket the cabinet, lay the head down onto padding or a small pillow and strap it to the cabinet.  Head should rest against the back plate of the cabinet so it doesn't move when raising it upright.  Add another blanket around the head and strap or wrap, then take off the back legs, stand it to upright storage position, take off the front legs, wrap the legs in a towel, bolts in an old sock, and away you go....

Legs taken off and left flat, head again needs to be blanket wrapped and a large pillow against the backglass to stop vibration.  The cabinet could be layed onto blankets for added vibration protection as well on either situation.  Make sure nothing is loose or can move around in the trailer.  Everything should be removed from inside the games, such as extra parts, balls, cash box, and manual that might damage components should it move in the machine.

remove the latch on the main cab, and the latch bracket on the backbox.
