Nintendo Introduces "Switch Light";

It's basically the hand held version, presumably to replace the 3DS.

Still not fitting in your pocket easily and has no docking capabilities but has integrated controls versus requiring the joypads.

Seems OK as long as they still make the other model, or if they phase out the original come up with an accessory to connect the "light" to a TV.

I haven't used my Switch at all for months but when I did it was nearly always connected to a TV or monitor. I'm sure some games would be fine on the small screen, no problem with anything designed for that (like just about all Nintendo handheld games from the past, Gameboy through 3DS) but Breath of the Wild never felt right to me on a small screen and some stuff was a bit hard to read, hard to see small objects in the distance, etc. unless it was connected to a bigger screen.

Will they patch games that use motion control and crap like that to work with this new model?

My problem with the switch is I'm not sure how i'd use it. It's way too big to be portable for me. I'm not in school where I can sling this in a backpack. When I do want to take a portable with me I'd rather have a 3DS since it's more compact.

Secondly i'm not sure there are any 'must have' games for it for me yet. Zelda is the obvious answer but I just got the Wii U version of that (which I also haven't played yet, lol). A lot of the 1st party Switch games are just ports of Wii U games I already have.

I'll get one eventually but i'm in no hurry.

As for this model, probably not though. And if you want to play something that requires Joycons (ie Motion Control) you have to buy Joycons for it that I guess you just use wirelessly. That seems like it would be really awkward..

I would have really been into this if it still was able to connect to a TV. This version will be much better to play in handheld mode than the other one, but it just seems weird to call it a "Switch" and not be able to actually switch??

I have not owned a Wii U or a Switch, but these are my thoughts.

Long term plan did seem to show that the Switch was going to become the eventual successor to the 3DS.

I think the Wii U is a superior feature-rich machine vs the Switch as it allows you to view different content on the handheld controller and on the big screen allowing for maps etc and a more immersive experience. I don't need to play games on the go.

Zelda Breath of the Wild was designed for the Wii U but the map on the controller was taken out, it was reported, so it wouldn't outshine the Switch version on features.

Opinion:
The Switch is good, but it doesn't do 3D like the 3DS does and it doesn't do multi screen playing like the Wii U OR the 3DS does. The joycons are much cheaper in feel compared to the Wii U's controls, and the symetrical layout of the Wii U's analogue joysticks is superior to the asymetrical layout that the Switch uses.

I am a bit disappointed that the Switch Lite has come out, as it almost ensures that the original Switch will not be coming down in price soon (if ever). I would have rather had a $250 Switch instead of a $199 Lite and the $299 full. The Wii U was never discounted in prices from $299 to my recollection. Only the GameCube I believe may have ever been discounted amount Nintendo systems, other than Nintendo bringing out the 2nd versions of the NES and SuperNES.

I like the Nintendo stuff and owned the Wii U and have a Switch

the real issue for both is the lack of games.

Zelda and the Mario game were cool for switch but past that what is there really?

I kinda gave up on it... lack of games to keep me interested.

this is a good alternative for kids who will never dock it, to me it looks like the sides are irremovable which is good, because my kids love this device and the side controllers "joycons?" arent latching anymore- packing tape to the rescue

I do not agree. I have actually been overwhelmed with so many games for the unit that my wallet keeps taking a beating!

As for the Switch Lite, I never considered buying one until my OG Switch died right as the COVID-19 pandemic come our way, which meant that there were no V2 Switches available. Yet since I rarely used my OG Switch in docked mode I elected to try a Switch Lite. Much to my surprise I love the Switch Lite I bought and do not regret it at all.
