I did that once.  Had a picture once of a tow truck also towing a semi backwatds (couldn't see the tow) and the picture made it look like it was coming right at me head one!  Freaked a lot of people out.

never thought about walking around with that pigtail in "hot" status, so to speak.

Take a look at generator interlocks if you don't want to mess around with cords running all through the house.  You'll spend ~$300 for everything involved, but you'll be legal and safe.  Though, I have no idea what kind of generator you have.

Agreed 100%. Do NOT backfeed your house through the dryer recep!!  It is dangerous and could possibly burn your house down or kill you.  On the same topic, do not use your propane grill or generator in your garage.

I got tried of running cords for the generator and had been thinking about getting a transfer switch for a while and finally pulled the trigger last week.  If there was more time I would have probably gone with a 10 circuit but they only carry the 6 circuit in the stores and I didn't want to wait on shipping.

What I really wanted was the basics to take the edge off of having no power so I have refrigerator, lights, TV & internet, charging devices, septic pump, etc.  I have an inverter generator which doesn't put out 220 so no A/C or hot water (although I think you can run a 220 water heater with 120 but it will just take longer) Picked up a 30 amp cord to connect the generator and it works really great.  For around $300 and $50 for the cable I think it was definitely worth it.

Was out of town all weekend (DragonCon).. expected to be in a nasty situation on the drive back but barely saw any rain from Atlanta to Tampa today.

Glad we missed this one but man this thing must have pounded the Bahamas. It just sat there for what a day? That's insane.

I'm kinda Surprised the Duke Outage map isn't showing anything near Melbourne.  I'll keep my fingers crossed.  It's finally starting to pick up here in Deland.
