WATCHMEN on HBO - SPOILERS
« on: October 23, 2019, 03:32:47 PM »
No spoilers from me, but no need for two threads, say what ya want.....

The first ep was good but not 'great', I'll follow the season to see what it does.

I liked the world building and the basic setup, but they need a better stunt coordinator for the fight scenes, and two of the major characters made STOOPID decisions.

I like Regina King, but need more of her character for it to grow on me. Tim Blake Nelson and Don Johnson were great though!

Of course I read the original story, but never read any of the comic's prequels/sequels. The original comic/story isn't going anywhere, and if you liked the movie it's still there too, so I'm open to a new take on it.

wasn't a big fan of either the comic or the movie, but the 1st episode, while not great, kept me interested to the end. Thoroughly enjoyed Don Johnson's role, so the ending really pissed me off

EPISODE 2

Definitely picking up speed, flashbacks are working fine, Lou Gossett Jr. is GREAT!
Got a bit choked up with that moment between him and Regina King at the end.

One thing I still don't like is plugging in O.G. Watchmen references out of episode context just to be 'geek cool', or not explaining WHY it's there. Example from Episode 1- Is that the ORIGINAL Nite Owl ship, confiscated and used by police, or did Veidt license the tech to police and they have a fleet of them? The show is good on it's own without throwing some things in just for a 'wink'.

On a related note, here's a decent read about all the fragile white male egos being triggered by the new Watchmen show...

EPISODE 3

Jean Smart joins the party and brings her A-game following her run on FX's excellent LEGION show.
The show is still good, but with each episode laying the groundwork for new/re-introduced characters, everything's not gonna be wrapped up in a season or two. Veidt gives a big hint where he's at, although showrunner Damon Lindelof borrows bits of Neil Gaiman's run of Alan Moore's other classic comic, Miracleman (a-hem).

Finally caught up on the last 3 episodes of WATCHMEN.

Eps 4 & 5 were... OK... still world building and setting up characters. Still inserting stuff from the comic to be 'cool', but the best things the show has done are the original things they've added. Episode 6 had really good visual/camera work, and might get an award nomination for Directing.

I still fear just a cliffhanger at the end of the season, whereas I prefer some sort of ending to the current storyline and starting fresh with another one next season.

Say goodbye to HBO's Watchmen series as creator Damon Lindelof has bailed from the show, which more than likely means a Season 2 will never happen.

USA Today reports that Lindelof filled them in that he has no interest in a Watchmen Season 2, but that he is open for someone else to take over:

VDO.AI
Lindelof told USA TODAY this week that he's told the story he wants to tell and has no interest in a second season, though he's "given my blessing" to HBO should it want to pursue a new installment with another writer-producer.

This didn't really look like a show for me at all, but everyone says it's good.

Here's a question though.. does it end well? It doesn't look like a Season 2 is going to happen so does this one season tell a complete story or is this another Alien Nation situation?

Honestly I did not like the Movie that much .
never read the Comics .

This even if it is a one and Done season one .
it is well worth the viewing and I would look forward to your review as I liked this Show  .
May be the first Race diversified cast that didn't feel out of place or Forced on you .
having seen the Movie may have helped me understand the show a little better but not much and still liked it .

My biggest problem with it is even the heavy-handed politics, it's that I just don't think Watchmen needed a sequel. To me it's kinda like Bladerunner -- it's a really good complete story, just let it be.

I just finished this series and to me it was head and shoulders above the movie.  The casting took a while to really gel, the main character was a bit wooden at first but she really grew into it.  Forget all the political/woke nonsense and just watch a good story play out.

I thought the HBO series was as good as a 'sequel' could be, but for me it didn't quite 'stick the landing' with the last episode.
Kinda glad there won't be another season, not a Lindelof fan but it turned out he was right for the job.
The odds of anyone else having the respect for the original material he had are pretty small.
Love or hate Zack Snyder, his 300 and Watchmen adaptations were pretty accurate.
I thought the Watchmen movie was a GREAT adaptation until the different ending.
Obviously the new show proved the original ending could have worked.
