Review: Flemings or How do they stay in Business?
« on: January 15, 2021, 03:28:12 PM »

Flemings is the "Fine Dining" restaurant in the Outback chain group. They offer the usual steak house faire.

Once thing that always struck me about them is they do try.. They always have a rose for the lady, if you go for a special event they will print out a little card for you. They also take your picture with a circa 2005 Nikon Coolpix and print it out in a little paper border that says Flemings. It's all included gratis and while nice I can only imagine that Maitre'D at one of the other Fine Dining restaurants absolutely cringing at this theme park style gimmickry but hey the Wife does like it.

The service is usually OK. Although when we went last week while the server was nice and attentive enough at first he promptly sodded right on off after the starters when we asked to see the drink list so we could order another cocktail. He did not return until after we had received and finished our mains so we didn't bother ordering any more drinks. I think they had him overwhelmed with too many tables but still, this sort of thing would have been unacceptable at Applebees.

The food is also mostly OK. It's definitely a step above the slop they are now serving at Outback but I can't say that their steaks would beat out any other restaurant in this price point. It can also be hit or miss, like this last week everything was fine except the dessert, a cruise ship style chocolate lava cake. The actual cake was bitter AF, like let me get a mint to get this taste out afterwards bitter. A bad way to end the night.

So overall not sure how this place stays in business. An evening out here with drinks and appetizers is going to run you about $125 a person with tip. At that price point you have a multitude of other options including chains like The Capital Grille which are usually in the same area geographically but are overall much, much better (sans the coolpix photo). I give them some credit for trying but I'm not sure that's good enough at this price level.

And you are probably wondering why the hell do we go there.. well every year (through no fault of our own) we end up with a handful of Outback giftcards -- Holiday cards, Gift Baskets.. parents don't know how to use gift cards, etc. Since the Outbacks in our area have become increasingly awful we just save the cards up until we have about $200 worth then hit up Flemings. For $50 it's a fine meal and it's better than 3 trips to Outback.

I'd be dead of a blooming onion overdose within a week.

I feel like most other things at Outback have gone way downhill, or were never good in the first place, but that onion + sauce is still solid. Had takeout at a work function right before COVID hit, and even at room temp it was good.

The cheese fries on the other hand, WTF happened? Those used to be great (deadly calorie/fat bomb - but tasty!), last couple times I've been there though (years ago at this point) there were fewer toppings and they were just bland.
I never thought their steaks were anything special, which is kind of a major problem when "Steakhouse" is part of the name.

I think it's the whole chain-group going downhill, I used to love Carabba's but the quality declined as the prices went up, so fuck 'em.
Actually making a version of their sausage-lentil soup for dinner tonight, it's easy enough. https://www.food.com/recipe/carrabbas-sausage-and-lentil-soup-162864

Yeah I'm not quite sure either. Back in the 90s Outback was like the 'above average' place, definitely nicer than say a Chilis. But in the last few years it's like Applebees level. Last time I got a steak there they murdered the poor damn thing into charcoal. And yes even the Cheese fries are just a mushy mess now.

I agree the Bloomin' Onion is still worth it.. but the wife doesn't like onions and I'm not sure I'd want to just eat a bloomin' onion for dinner by itself lol.. but if I ever go back to Outback it will be because of that. Maybe I can just get one to go.

Caraba's is OK but I'm not the biggest Italian food fan so it's not one we normally frequent. I feel most Italian food tastes about the same to me, it's just fancy Spaghetti or whatever.

GD right. I say it all the time. Most restaurants have gone to shit but people keep going. Addiction maybe? Or the marketing still works where the people believe oh this time it will look and taste like it does on TV and it'll make me so happy!

I am done with a lot of chains and even a lot of Mom and Pops too.

It's a bit of a moot point since I'd no longer recommend Carraba's anyway, but their best dishes used to be more the "Northern Italian" style (through the lens of an American chain restaurant).
Things like veal marsala, pollo rosa maria & others - more meat-based, usually with mashed potatoes. No marinara sauce to be seen, unless you order spaghetti as a side.
The calamari with pepper sauce used to be good too, and there's no freaking way I'm going to buy squid, take it home, prep it and then deep fry it. That's definitely a restaurant-only dish.

They do have the standard lasagna, spaghetti & meatballs, etc. too of course, and I agree that there's no point in going out for basic pasta. Spaghetti is cheap & easy to make at home, and things like lasagna, manicotti, etc. are fairly easy too and freeze really well.

Here is what welcomes you as you drive into the Bonita Springs Carrabbas.
I used to regularly wait 30 minutes or more for a table here...used to...

Well that's the problem for most Italian for me. I look at the $18 pasta meal and can't help but think that (to me) it isn't a heck of a lot better than a can of Chef Boyardee and a healthy application of $1.50 Kraft Parmesan cheese. Like I said not my favorite food genre.

Come on now, there's still good restaurants out there but I agree a lot of the chains have gone down hill.

The only restaurant I thought was still good in the Outback chain was Le Roy Selmons. It was kinda niche as it was mid-level sit-down BBQ which what else is there.. Sonnys? Haha

But of course Le Roy was the first against the wall when the revolution came.

I just saw they are building an Outback Express (fast food?) restaurant near me, replacing the WTF which was mostly awful except their excellent, excellent Buffalo Chicken Pizza. (May it rest in peace)

Maybe Outback food will be better done faster and cheaper? Well, probably not but we'll see.

We ate at Fleming's a few years ago and weren't overly impressed either.

I remember the steaks were pretty good, but the main takeaway was how LOUD the dining room was. Like loud enough to keep us from going back.

If I want to blow money I would go to Charlies over most other places in Tampa..

Shulas is pretty good too and there is never anyone there since its in a hotel or something... I have been in there with only one other couple in the place.

Went to the Shulas in Orlando once, remember it being decent.

I did like Dan Marinos over in St Pete when that was in Business. The Mahi Mahi was pretty good.
