Micro Soldering Repairs
« on: September 30, 2022, 12:28:12 AM »
I accidentally broke off the micro-usb connector on my FPGA Mister board.

I ordered a replacement port, but looking at this - the connections are way too tiny for me to repair with my soldering equipment.

I took a to a local pc repair shop, and called some local phone repair shops, but they said they could not do it either.

I would just bite the bullet and buy a new one when they were $100, but now  new one of these is $350!

Looking to see if anyone can refer me to a place to do this kind of repair.

If this is still an issue when FPF rolls around, bring it by.

If it were just soldering the port to some soldering pads, I could do that myself, but  the traces have been ripped out, and are very small.
(It's pretty bad - see pic)

I understand it would be fairly simple : pull the schematic and wire jumpers from the new micro usb port to where they go on the board.

I've done plenty of this kind of repair on older tech with larger soldering points  (recently repaired a friend's GO7 board that had been cracked in shipping and we had to do about 2 dozen jumpers there to get it going)

But don't have the eyes, microscope, steady enough hand, or fine enough soldering tips to handle this.  So I'm looking for someone else with better equipment to handle this.

This is an unusual repair attempt, maybe clean the tips of traces on all damaged areas, solder the connector back, then redraw the bad traces with a solder pen.

it's fixable, but will require some bodge wires

Probably this.  It looks like the land-pads were pulled up.  If it were me I'd solder to the leads on the underside of the connector, then assemble on the board and run the mag-wires where they need to go.

Seems like you have a good bit of help already, but if you need I've got a scope and SMD-tip iron.  I'm in Melbourne.

If you think you could do this kind of job for less $$$ than replacing, I would gladly send it your way - like I said, I don't have the equipment or the desire to attempt this kind of repair.
