Curious if anyone else is in a perpetual storage space problem for games, pins, projects, parts, etc?  Over the years I've had to get a few storage units in the Tampa Bay area, and recently one of them increased my storage fee by 35% in 3 months.  There's no contract, and they know that once they got you, they got you, and there have been ridiculous with price increases over the past 4 years "because they can".  Without getting too far into whether the increases were in line with market price and all of the real estate prices souring, I can honestly say that I can find the same size unit for much cheaper ($100/month) if I just am willing to move my unit.  If I look at inflation and what's available, my storage company has been very aggressive with my account.  It certainly "is what it is", but I can't be the only one with this problem.

Does anyone have any solutions in the Tampa area?  I actually have 2 units at 2 different places, and something has to give.  I hate to give up on my projects and storage, but I don't keep my super rare games there so the rent over a year or two is getting up to equal the value of things being stored... not accounting for the personal sentimental value which is the real reason I pay it.

When I lived up north, having a basement was golden.  What I wouldn't do to have that extra space now!

LOOK! Your shoe is untied!

I think it's pretty common in that industry.  No matter where you go unless it a mom and pop old style kind of place, they will probably hit you up for an increase yearly.  Ultimately do you have space on your property?  Storage in a building or 'barn' on your property is the best way to go because it raises the value of your property and eventually the money you would spend on storage-rent catches up to the cost of a tilt wall/pre-fab type building pretty quick.  Lots of pre-fab and tilt-wall pre-engineered options out there, Ive looked into them myself.

A friend of mine is looking to buy a larger warehouse space in the Tampa area and said prices are ridiculous and space is at a premium now.

Allot of the things in Florida that were cheap for years are no longer that...

I had a biz warehouse for years around Brandon and accumulated way too much stuff... when I closed it I did the storage thing for a while but never should have, total pain in the ass and stress moving things around, waste of money etc etc. Should have just sold things off to begin with.

Storage IMO is not even close to being worth it unless you are doing this as a business and can write it off or get some other benefit.

i decided a long ass time ago, 2 things:

1) if i don't have the cash now to buy it, i don't need it. 1 time, i didn't abide by this rule: the home.
(explains partly of why i drive 20 year old pieces of crap :P)

2) if you have to pay someone to keep stuff you don't need to see monthly...you don't need that stuff.
(the home helps here...i have 2 pinballs folded up in the garage, only because i won't find them again)

if you're paying for storage because stuff has "value", you're throwing that value out the window with fees.   ;D
